Very true, since looks/ history/value all count in your score. The third category is very subjective though. The Claudius aureus from IdesOfMarch scored low in that category, however the price he paid was a bargain for such a high quality rare coin. So, he got a great return for money invested. In ten years that coin will be worth double/ plus the enjoyment from owning such a piece:happy:.

No doubt that all the categories are quite subjective. To me it adds another layer of strategy as you can read the voting patterns from previous rounds and try to adjust accordingly. And of course there is nothing in the rules against making your case for value for money under the "Why It's Cool" description... and yes IOMs coin was a show stopper in all categories :jawdrop::greedy: and so was Davids!

I thought about this tournament for a few days before I decided to enter, and ultimately decided to do so because I sensed there would be more strategy and fun, rather than being a purely competitive endeavor for the participants. Plus, it provides insight into an individual's tastes and how he/she evaluates a coin's features.

I also figured that if I turned out to be correct, you'd feel this way about it too.

This was a point that I raised prior to the start of the tournament, and it remains a subjective item to evaluate in any price range. But wait ten years?

Tournament seems to be going alright at the moment and is good fun, just a question on you spreadsheet, how do you arrive at the figures in column H?

Since everyone has 3 votes I have the spreadsheet set up to sum all the votes and divide by 3. That way I can see how long it takes for voting to plateau so I can calibrate the optimum time to leave the poll open for round 2.

...I am aware that it is for reasons like this that no one likes engineers :( (joke ;))

It also helps me decide if most of the likely voters have voted so I know if I need to bump the thread back to the top of the page with a reply.

Do you actually know how many voters there are?

Naw, just a guess based on the number of votes.

That even proves my point more/ you got it in 2008 for 24K/ now an exact specimen sold at Ars Classica for 61K....that is 37K increase in value=8 years. Like i said many times/ high quality/ rare coins give you the highest return and pleasure for $ spent. Plus yours is better quality:happy: I won a FDC Diocletian aureus from Triton V in 2005/ for 10K/ same coin sold in 2014 for 50K/ so these would rate as excellent in that 3rd category. Coin collectors can have their cake and eat too;)

Yes Ides asked a few questions and wanted to make sure everyone was on roughly equal footing with a good chance to win before he committed to play. Big cudos to him, and everyone else who has entered, for their excellent sportsmanship.

Not sure this could have worked with just any group of collectors.

Very kind of you to write that @stevex6 , thank you !

If we both happen to win our first round, we would have to play together in the next one. Of course everyone here is well educated and fairplay enough not to underestimate their challenger. I have to admit being impressed by the look you have on the picture you provided (time has no effect on you my coinfriend) :

Sadly, I don't look like that anymore (if I ever did) :

This game is lot of fun. Thanks again @Curtisimo for organizing it !!
