    LordM & Friends Coin Giveaway, May, 2019

    Deadline for entries: Midnight Eastern US time, Friday, May 31, 2019.

    Contest now CLOSED. Winners announced in Post #137.

    [IMG]

    Hi, everybody, and welcome to the latest monthly giveaway!

    If this is your first time entering one of these contests, I apologize for making you slog through all the text below. It's really not as bad as it looks. Just look at some of the entry posts other folks have made, if you're confused.

    This month there are seven prize lots given by five donors.

    In other words, there will be seven drawings and each contestant will have seven chances to win something!

    My fine donor partners this month are:

    @spirityoda
    @Stevearino
    @Trish
    @Devyn5150

    So many thanks to them for their generosity!

    To enter:

    1. Please include the words "entry post" in your initial post to this thread - and only your first post. You may reply to this thread as many times as you like, but if you put the phrase "entry post" into more than one reply, you will disqualify yourself.

    2. In addition to the words "entry post", post something else that is coin-related in some way- whatever you like. This can be a question, observation, coin picture, story, or even a joke- as long as it is coin-related somehow.

    3. To expedite the prize allotments at the end of the month, please specify your prize choices, in order of preference. (List your first favorite choice, second favorite, third favorite, etc., in order.) The first winner drawn will get his or her first pick, and then the next winner will get his or her first pick from the remaining prizes, and so on.

    The fine print:

    • If your lucky number (the permalink number of your entry post) comes up in the drawing at the end of the month, you've won a prize. Drawings are done with the random.org True Random Number Generator.
    • To see how this works and has played out before, look at some of the past monthly giveaways. (I've put an archive of those in Post #3.)
    • I will gladly ship prizes outside the USA (or reimburse donor partners for doing so), but if international shipping proves too costly, I do reserve the right to substitute prizes (such as with an electronic PayPal gift, etc).
    • If you are a minor, we're delighted to have you play, but please make sure you have your parents' permission to enter this giveaway, since if you win, we will be required to ask for your mailing address.
    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

    See Post #2 below for the list of prizes! :)

    Prize #1, from @lordmarcovan :

    An 1875-CC United States dime (mintmark above bow variety).

    A Very Fine example, with full LIBERTY on the shield. From the coveted Carson City Mint. I will add that I bought this coin from @C-B-D, who didn't want to be listed as a donor but who sold this to me at a very friendly price, below his cost, when he heard I was buying it for the giveaway.

    Prize #2, from @lordmarcovan :

    A 1532-KB "Madonna & Child" hammered silver denar from Hungary.

    Yes, that's right, this is a silver coin nearly 500 years old. It was struck at the Kremnica mint. Note the curious numeral style, which rendered the "2" in the date as a "Z". This is common on early-dated 16th century coinage.

    See my thread about these coins. I briefly collected these, but never had this date. Note that there is also a link in that thread to an informative 147-page free e-book (in PDF format) about the coins and kings of Hungary.

    Prize #3, from @spirityoda :

    A 2019 Great Britain Stephen Hawking commemorative 50-pence coin.

    Uncirculated, in Royal Mint packaging. Celebrates the life and career of the late physicist Stephen Hawking (1942-2018), and the design features a black hole.

    Prize #4, from @spirityoda :

    A 2016 Great Britain William Shakespeare commemorative 2-pound coin, NGC certified MS66.

    Commemorates the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. In an NGC "First Release" labeled slab. Royal Mint specifications page here.

    Prize #5, from @Stevearino :

    A 3-piece lot of assorted items, plus a pair of Canadian large cents (1859 & 1919).

    In the first picture is a small lot containing a 1970 Canadian Manitoba dollar commemorative in the original Royal Canadian Mint holder, a 1943 silver USA Walking Liberty half, and an interesting old Proctor and Gamble token for 2 free cakes of white naphtha soap, which he found metal detecting. (I believe that is circa 1920s vintage.)

    In the second picture is a pair of Canadian large cents, which includes an 1859 coin with the portrait of Queen Victoria and a 1919 coin with the portrait of King George V.

    (Larger image of first lot below)

    (Sorry I could not upload a larger image of this second part of Prize #5- I ran out of Gallery space.)

    Prize #6, from @Trish :

    Four old silver coins from Latin America.

    Coins here are from Brazil (a 1911 1,000 Réis), Costa Rica (a low-mintage 1912 10-céntimos), Panama (a 1962 1/4-Balboa- these were struck by the US Mint on our silver quarter planchets), and Honduras (a 1958 20-centavos- also struck by the US Mint). All are silver. Some of them look as though they might be Brilliant Uncirculated, too.

    Prize #7, from @Devyn5150 :

    A largish lot of Canadian coins and stamps.

    It's a nicely assorted mix of things, and it looks as though most of the coins are Brilliant Uncirculated.

    Update: see his full description in Post #5.

    (Again, my apologies if I failed to upload all the pictures- I ran out of space in the Gallery here, and I'd rather shove a burnt stick in my eye than use Photobucket again.)

    *whew!*

    Must say I'm relieved. I was worried you might be hinting that it's a wee bit over the top. I'm conscious of how ponderous and bloated the intro section has become, for one thing. I need to trim that down a bit so it doesn't scare people off.

    Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad it was positive. Of course the biggest thanks goes to my donor partners. I never solicit partners in this, but almost every month several people step up and volunteer some goodies out of the kindness of their hearts.

    Look at @Devyn5150, for example. Brand new member only a week old, and already a donor in the giveaway. A tip o' my hat in his direction.

    The year is 1968. I'm 9 y/o. My grandmother, may she rest in peace, started me on my life long coin collecting journey. She gave me rolls of silver quarters, IHC, and various other exonumia.

    Grandma had coins hidden everywhere. One day she and I were doing some cleaning. She started emptying out some old pocketbooks when she stumbled upon these two buffalo nickels:

    When I was 12 I bought a 1914d cent from a classmate for just $1! When I showed it to my Father I found out it was a 1944d that had been filed down! Glad I didn't have it graded-just kidding!
