@Orfew had an awesome one, so I'm stealing the idea. Y'see, since I was on hiatus between August and November, there was a gap in my regular monthly giveaways, so we'll make up for it here. @Aethelred recently gave me a copy of The Crimes of Elagabalus, by Martijn Icks. I had the idea of pairing that book with a coin of Elagabalus for my Saturnalia giveaway. (Neat idea, right? Coin/book combo package!) So I bought this Elagabalus Antioch bronze from @Ken Dorney. (Hey, I like that little eagle on the reverse.) Fun combo gift, right? But then - uh oh! I found out that my Secret Saturnalia victim - um - designee - is none other than one of those two guys mentioned above, which kind of threw a wrench in the plan! So let's do a pre-Saturnalia giveaway with this pair of items, instead. It's not as awesome as @Orfew's giveaway, but since somebody already won that, here's another chance for y'all to get some loot. To enter, merely put the words "entry post" in your initial post to this thread if you're an established CoinTalk member with 50+ posts or so. If you are not an established member and are a relatively unknown newbie to the forums, that's fine, too, but I'll expect a post from you detailing why you want to enter and have the coin and the book. (I'd rather the prize go to somebody who's either been around or is going to stick around, if you know what I mean.) I'll draw a winner on or around Monday, December 17th, using a random number generator, as I do with my regular monthly giveaways. Speaking of which, November's giveaway is here, if you want in on that, too. ~RWS/"LM"
Not an entry post, but that book was my beach read last year, and for the most part I found it to be excellent!
Entry post That book looks really interesting. Elagabalus is a fun character character to study, like Wang Mang
NOT an entry! What a well thought out gift, Rob! Well done. That should really inspire a starting collector into the world of Ancient coins!
Entry post. Don't have a coin of Elagabalus and am always looking to expand my historical nonfiction collection. Thanks for this @lordmarcovan !
Entry post. I've always been fascinated by Elagabalus's wild stories and the coin is amazing! I'd give it a good home for a long time
Entry post. I find Elagabalus a fascinating emperor and would love that book! And that coin would find a happy home alongside my other Antioch coins of his! So here's a coin to share: Edit: Here's the attribution in response to @Kentucky's post below... Elagabalus, Ruled 218-222 AD Seleukis and Pieria, AE20, Antioch Mint Obverse: IMP C MAVR ANTONINVS [AVG], laureate bust right, three dots at top of laurel. Reverse: ΔE across field, star below, all within wreath of 10 elements fastened at top with garland. Reference: BMC 447-50, McAlee 799 Size: 20mm, 4.64g It IS interesting that it has the latin legend on the obverse and not the usual greek. Here's another version of the same coin: Elagabalus, Ruled 218-222 AD Seleukis and Pieria, AE19, Antioch Mint Obverse: IMP C MAV[R ANT]ONINVS AVG, laureate bust right, three dots at top of laurel. Reverse: ΔE across field, star below, all within wreath of 10 elements fastened at top with garland. Reference: BMC 447-50, McAlee 799 Size: 19mm, 6.94g ------------------------------------------- And now, back to your regularly scheduled program, er... giveaway!
Entry post...is that considered a provincial? I have a coin with a similar reverse I will post when I get home.
I'll read anything about Elagabalus. My favorite actor. No really I'm going to have to look that up. Oh. A ruler. Terrible name.
Great giveaway @lordmarcovan. Amazing to see all the amazing people on this forum. Obviously not an entry since I was lucky enough to win @Orfew 's give away. I'm looking forward to seeing who is lucky enough to win though Good luck all!
