  12. Got a question, does this apply to any, heavily toned coin?

Wow this thread sure has been dead for quite some time, shall it continue?:):).The pictures don't do justice its much better in person who doesn't like crusty war nickels. 20210915_201230.jpg 20210915_201244.jpg

Clearly not a monster, but the toning is a nice adjunct to the coin IMO.

This thread was for any toned coin from low end to high end. It depends what you mean by heavily toned. If that is a brownish or terminal coin then it likely to be on the lower end of the scale.

The interest was fading so I decided to end it back in April.
Crusty coins tend to fall on the lower end of the toning scale. They are often original and have character but aren't flashy enough to garner a high score.

That's a nice Peace Dollar and I'd agree it would be on the lower end of the toning scale.

The first post states Morgans for our toning examples, yet clearly there are a lot of other Types in this thread. Morgans are known to produce Monsters. So, just for interests sakes, are we judging apples to apples here or apples to oranges? In other words, a person may collect a particular Type that tends to have more muted toning than Morgans, and post a coin that within the Type would be considered a Monster, but on the Morgan scale might top out at 4. How would you score it?

Also, within certain Types certain date/mm are known for being much easier to find nicely toned, or conversely other date/mm within the Type are known for being much harder for finding nicely toned. Are there adjustments to the scoring for the date/mm within the given Type?

    Thank you!

Here's an example of Type and color. For the Type, FH $1, IMO I'd give this a 3 or a 4. Yet for a Morgan this would be a 1.

@Skyman we discussed some of what you mentioned (see above from some of my early posts). At first the idea was to use the Morgan scale but that was causing issues. Then we switched to a personal opinion scoring (so your coin above would have people who know these score it like you at a 3-4 while others that continue to base it on Morgans would give it a 1-2). That introduces other issues, but I don't think there is a foolproof way to do it (since no one knows all coins and opinions will vary greatly for certain coins).

Do I just jump in, here? Sorry, I know this is a long-running thread (I can see that by the fact I'm posting on Page 96), and I did give the intro a brief read, but this is my first time here.

I'd love to know how my 1965 SMS Lincoln scores.

I named this coin "Watermelon Inversion". It is just as spectacular in hand.

Since we are seeing new interest, let's do the four coins posted (I'm excluding the Peace Dollar from skyman in favor of the 1795 Dollar)

Edit: I removed my scoring from this post and moved it to the next page (since we added one more coin).
