On the other hand @TIF I'm glad you didn't enter, there are enough potential winners to struggle against as it is :D

    Best :)

Funnily enough, I've always hated competitions and tend to steer clear of anything that even hints that it will require a competitive spirit. I threw my name into the ring chiefly to support Curt's effort in doing something that I thought was fun and interesting for the board. That I'm enjoying it actually comes as an pleasant surprise :shame:.

I think @zumbly stated my intentions more eloquently than I could hope to... thank you zumbly! Before this game I hadn't had a chance to talk with any of you past the occasional "nice coin!" Now I have had the opportunity to interact with many of you and I think it's been great

I am glad you posted this @TIF as I was worried some might feel this way. I want to give you a good answer so I hope you will all excuse me if this is a bit long winded :)

The competition is not meant as a competition between coins to measure the "best" coin it is meant as a fun game where the MEMBERS compete based on the category system. Think of it like playing cards or something. I am going to play this coin against XYZ because I think it will do well in category XYZ. My biggest fear before starting this was that someone will get upset if their coin loses. Please don't do that! The voting does not measure the "best" coin (which is really just personal preference) because if it did there would be only two vote choices ;) A good example of this would be #2 vs #15. I have been after a MA denarius for a while and would have snagged that coin at auction in a heartbeat. However I gave 2 out of 3 to the Probus because I thought it was a beautiful coin that was shockingly good value!

Plus I've learned a ton from this already... a coin minted from appropriated church silverware... cool! The first troubadour... wow!... I spent an hour on Wikipedia after I posted that coin lol

As for likes not mattering I will tell on myself... I like when you guys like OR comment on one of my coins. I also enjoy liking and commenting on all of yours. There are no ancient coin clubs around me so you guys are really the only other adults I know that share my interest in this great hobby. It's nice to be part of the community and have others appreciate the same stuff you do. I think what we ALL advise against is when people start judging the value or interest of their own coins based on number of likes on a thread. That is self destructive behavior that will lead to losing sight of the fun of the hobby.

So in summation this is just for fun and something I thought you would all enjoy and I hoped to get to know some of you better. And it's working... this is the longest interaction we have had TIF ;)

Perhaps I should start referring to it as a "game" instead of "competition."

It's rumored that the first chariot race commenced 30 seconds after the second chariot was finished being built.

Yes, we're all Y-chromosome cliches at heart, those of us with that genetic characteristic (or aberration?).

In addition to being an opportunity to learn more about collectors' preferences, this tournament strikes me as a bit of a (baseball) pitching contest: if I'm facing a four-game series, do I put my best pitcher up first? Should I bring in another pitcher for the next game? Does the other team have a surprise lefty that I hadn't known about?

I've always been more interested in the why of "likes" rather than the actual number of "likes." This tournament -- yes, competition -- is a way of possibly learning more about why one collector likes certain coins better than others.

I've been following along too, and though I don't like competition I try to be fair when voting. It makes it much better when its a friendly competition. Its all fun as long as no one takes it too seriously and it is interesting to see the coins.

Also have to admit, most of the likes I give is because its always nice to make someone feel good when getting a coin in the mail. I want to believe that keeping members happy, will help CT, and also get more people interested in ancients keeping the hobby healthy.

Hello again everyone. Our third heat (of four) is up and running and there are a couple of really great match-ups.

#7 panzerman vs #10 Ancient Aussie

Two coins that I would love to have in my collection. Beautiful!

#4 Mikey Zee vs #13 Nicholas Molinari

This looks like a very evenly matched contest. Great coins.

Thank you to everyone who has voted and commented so far. I am very pleased with how everything is turning out even without the price limit restriction we started with.

I am keeping track of how long it takes the voting frequency to plateau (I have a spreadsheet and everything :)) and I will adjust the poll length accordingly for future rounds. For the first it is 7 days to vote.

Our last two contests of the 1st round will post tomorrow at about this time. Have fun!

Hello again everyone. We are on our fourth and final heat for the first round and we have some excellent matches.

    #3 Alegandron vs #14 Parthicus

This is my favorite match-up in the tournament so far. Historical awesomeness is off the charts!

    #6 David Atherton vs #11 IdesOfMarch01

This is a cool battle of high grade Roman silver vs gold in the time of the 12 Caesars... wow!
    https://www.cointalk.com/threads/poll-6-david-atherton-vs-11-idesofmarch01-round-1-cit-2017.294172/

Well that is it for the first round. Thank you all for playing and for voting. We will start the second round next week once all the polls have closed. I hope you all enjoyed it.

...so again to our 16 great participants!

We will have to make this a permanent contest, perhaps spread it to Worldwide coins/ US coinage/ Paper money/ Dark Ages/ Medieval.....

Oh, and thanks again for thinking of the idea and pulling the coin-trigger!! (sure, it's a bit controversial, but it's still a car accident waiting to happen, right?) ...

Nice! Thanks Steve. I also have a need to organize (we are both engineers after all)

    Spreadsheet.PNG

I will post all the final scores again once the polls close. I am thinking we probably don't need a full week for the polls. It seems most people have had the chance to cast their vote in the first 4 or 5 days. I will continue to watch and see what happens with the voting before setting the poll timer on round two.

Fingers crossed to avoid car accidents ;)

We are already underway for this year's tournament but I would be more than happy to have you join in next year around this time :)

Okay, gimme a hint ... are we "supposed-to/allowed-to" choose a different coin for round two?

=> or do I have to ride that sweet Hippo to the finish-line?

    hippo 3.jpg

... so fricken cute, eh? (baby hippo is a total winner!)

    Man, I need that coin!!

Yes you can choose a different coin for each round. Remember it's not about playing your favorite coin... it's about picking a strategy and an appropriate coin you think will work against your opponent. Do you wanna try to win all three categories... or sacrifice one based on what you think your opponent will play in order to come out ahead on the overall score?

Should be interesting to see how people play now that we've got a first round behind us to get used to the format. :)

    Lol to that hippo picture!

Curtisimo, I have to admit this has been much more fun than I expected and as you (and most others) suggested, it isn't just a coin popularity contest-- there is strategy involved and it provides learning opportunities. Cool :)
