    Tournament Update:

Okay everyone we had a slight change in the bracket. @arashpour will not be able to participate any longer so I have offered his spot the the first person who offered to be an alternate and he has accepted. Big thanks to @Jwt708 for offering to step in. If there are any further drop outs we have some others who also volunteered to be alternates and I'd like to thank them as well.

Without further ado here is the updated bracket.
    Bracket-1.jpg

This also seems like a good time to post links to our ongoing matches.

    Round 1
    Group 1

    [Poll-1] #15 Jay GT4 vs #18 Milesofwho (Round 1) CIT 2018
This match up is still neck-and-neck as of this post. Two very evenly match coins from completely different cultural backgrounds. If you haven't voted yet please do so. Even one vote could make the difference here.

    [Poll-2] #8 Bing vs #25 Roman Collector (Round 1) CIT 2018
Two great coins from two great coin-friends. A battle of well played Roman denarii. This is a fun match-up.

    Group 2

    [Poll-3] #7 BenSi vs #26 Ryro (Round 1) CIT 2018

Here is another close battle. Until I saw this match up I would not have thought two coins that were so radically different could have been so evenly matched across all 3 categories of the game. Here is another one you must vote on if you haven't yet.

    [Poll-4] #4 ancientcoinguru vs #29 Theodosius (Round 1) CIT 2018
Two beautiful Greek silvers in this fantastic contest. It's too early to see how close it will be on the scoreboard but it's a great match with two beautiful coins.

Well I finally made it over here. I've been pretty busy all week and find I've been slacking as I've only cast votes in one poll so far. The games @lordmarcovan and @Aethelred put on were life changing for me and you may be saying to yourself "ya right" but it's true. If I had not participated in those games I'd still likely be toiling away putting plastic slabs into plastic boxes - I bought my first ancient for NG10 and I've not looked back since.

And everyone should give a very loud shout out to Curtis for hosting this Coin Imperator Tournament as I know from my own experience how much time and effort is expended in putting something like this on. My hope would be that the ancient crew see some fun and exciting coins that would broaden their own collecting interests and that the non ancient CT'ers might be reading these posts and start thinking about adding a few ancients to their own collections.

    Thanks @Curtisimo !!!

Well said! To me, the whole idea of the discussion group is to experience coins and opinions on coins that we might otherwise miss. Certainly some of us will choose to ignore everything that is different from what we already collect and believe and will pat ourselves on the back for not being so foolish as to even think of considering another path. Those who already know it all have nothing to gain; those who realize how much they have to learn have nothing to hold them back.

Thank you @dadams . I appreciate the kudos from you and from all my other CT friends (both new and long standing) :)

    Note to Contributors

There have been a lot of great suggestions concerning formatting, organization, thread names etc. Please all be aware that even if I don't act on a suggestion that doesn't mean I didn't think it was a good one. Sometimes when you get the ball rolling on a complicated task it is much easier to stick close to the designated plan than to try and change too much mid-stream. In some cases there are also behind-the-scenes organizational reason I have certain things set up the way I do. All comments will be taken into account for this year (when feasible) and certainly for next year's tournament.

I'm an engineer... our plans don't always make sense to others :)

The organizational challenge this year is indeed a big one! We've doubled our tournament size. Yay us! It's been fun to interact with all of you in this tournament and I hope you are all having fun as well! Some fantastic coins so far. More on the way soon.

Good point. CT’s style has certainly helped me broaden my collection. Some recent, non-MFBs:

    Tournament Update
We are exactly halfway through our Round 1 matches and we have had some really fun threads so far! I am posting groups 3 and 4 here to this post. Please also note that I have updated the OP with links to all of our matches to date and will continue to do so as we move forward.

    Round 1
    Group 3

    [Poll-5] #2 Ancient Aussie vs #31 TypeCoin971793 (Round 1) CIT 2018
This match features two evenly matched coins with beautiful photos and excellent write ups. Truly a highlight of the first round.

    [Poll-6] #12 FitzNigel vs #21 Orfew (Round 1) CIT 2018
This match pits an iconic coin against a brilliantly executed strategy and the results are a very close contest. If you haven't voted yet please do as this one is close enough that every vote counts.

    Group 4

    [Poll-7] #3 ancient coin hunter vs #30 TheRed (Round 1) CIT 2018
We get to see our first true medieval coin make its appearance with this match and it is pitted against a rare Roman emperor! It will be a fun match up.

    [Poll-8] #1 Ajax vs #32 zumbly (Round 1) CIT 2018
An historic coin of the Diodochi takes on one of the most recognizable Roman coins with links to a Biblical event. I am going to predict this to be a close one so please weigh in folks... it's gonna be fun!

    A Note to the Participants
Now that the early matches are starting to close you may be wondering about the timeline for the second. I will wait a few days after the close of the last matches in the first round before posting the Round 2 matches. This will allow the dust to settle on the board a bit and hopefully build some anticipation. As such there is no hurry to get your entries in for the second round until the first closes out. Take your time and consider your strategy once you know your opponent.

I will be reaching out to all of our participants via PM near the end of Round 1. I also want to once again thank everyone who volunteered. It has been a real treat getting the sneak peeks at your fantastic coins and interesting write ups :)

I just wanted to give a shout out to our host @Curtisimo.

All of the matches so far have been formatted so they are very easy to follow. Even for a novice to ancients like myself. Also the work that must be done to put them all together must be huge. Hats off to you sir.:happy:

I feel I have learned a lot already and we are only half way through the first round! Cant wait to see what's coming up.:)

    Group 5

    [Poll-9] #10 Cucumbor vs #23 Parthicus (Round 1) CIT 2018
This is a great match up between two heavy-weights sporting some really interesting coins. Provencal Roman vs classic Phoenician.

    [Poll-10] #11 Dafydd vs #22 panzerman (Round 1) CIT 2018
Gold vs silver in this fun battle of historic coins!

    Group 6

Two fantastic coins... simple as that.

I do not see this as all that big a departure from your MFB's. The way I see it, this is a men faced bulla. :banghead:

Ken Dorney Yea, I'm Cool That Way...

I was on vacation for a couple weeks, then I'm now worrying about my house burning down in the current wildfire. However....am I the only one wondering just what the heck this is? Or how it works? I just dont know. I am sure if I owned a EID MAR Denarius it would win, so I am assuming its a popularity contest? No disrespect, I just dont know what this is, and I wonder why and when it will stop clogging up the boards.

Not exactly, feel free to follow the thread links in the OP and read about how it works and decide for yourself. Of course, you are also welcome to join in the discussions and play along with the game :)

Also, I hope all goes well with the fires and your home. Will be keeping all those in harms way in my thoughts.

None taken. The threads will stop when the game is over.

Sorry. This is what happens when one is gone for two weeks and comes back to what I have. So much on the mind, I will respectfully stick to other topics.

Thanks! So much to catch up on, maybe I should have just sit it out! But it gets boring waiting to see if one has the be evacuated. Maybe another topic, where should one retire, based on coin mints?????

Terina in Bruttium for me. I can see it from the mountain we're from in Calabria.

    TIF Always learning.

It's not just a popularity contest, which is not to say that biases do not appear :).

There are three categories for voting for each match: Eye Appeal, Best Bargain, and Historical or Numismatic Interest.

I seriously doubt an EID MAR could win. It would surely take the Historical category but would likely suffer in the other two categories, depending on the opponent coin of course.

It's a very cleverly crafted competition and there is certainly strategy involved.

There seems to be a bias against expensive coins, or perhaps people aren't taking the time to search for comparisons in sales archives. "Expensive" is a personal relativity though, and not every expensive coin played so far is a bargain.

Rarity doesn't always help either. It's a complex contest :)

I noticed this too. The only exception to this rule seems to have been @Orfew 's JC denarius. Even that one had a fight on its hands though.

It seems people are interpreting bargain as the amount of interest or appeal per dollar which I suppose is perfectly valid.

Does this include Greek islands? If so pencil me in for Mykonos or Rhodes :)
