So I want to add World Coins to my collection and so do others I'm sure. Can the World Coin Collectors suggest where to start theme wise or suggest a high end theme?

The British Empire/Commonwealth is always a great place to start. However, if you're brand new to world coins, I’d recommend Canada and Great Britain as those countries can be found in plentiful quantities from most dealers and marketplaces for minimal cost.

Edit: @lordmarcovan, you may wish to move this thread to the World Coins Forum.

You're in the wrong forum. This is the Ancient Coins forum; your question belongs in the World Coins forum.

What do you like? There are endless possibilities.
Collecting world crowns is one of the more popular things.
You can also collect by year (birth year, etc), animals (dog, cat, horse, etc), historical events, castles, kings, queens, famous people, etc...
Edit: since you are in the ancients forum, you can collect ancients. :D

Go to a dealer (if possible) and dig through their cheap foreign bin. Grab whatever seems interesting to you. Go home, research them, and go from there. You'll find something you enjoy pretty quick.

Collect world crown sized coins, lots and lots of variety. As someone else said earlier, check out the world silver crown size thread.

That really depends on your interests. World coinage, just like ancients or US coinage is vast, complex and a rewarding area.

Personally, over 30 or so years I've collected Spanish coinage, both mainland but primarily colonial. I've also "type" collected other areas (19th century and earlier), such as British coinage, French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, early German states/principalities, Dutch coinage (lots of lion daalders), and on a more limited basis, coinage of Asia, as well as ancients.

If you want focus initially on an area in which coins are readily available (though costly in very high grades, generally), I would suggest Latin American coinage, both colonial and republican.

No one should have to convince you what to collect. You should collect what you like! But, you can get many coins older than the U.S. but much cheaper than most 1800s US coins.

There are so many ways to collect world coins. I collect topical/ themed collections. such as "Coins with insects" ,"Coins with certain stars", "Coins with hands", MISC. world coins, toned coins (mostly Canadian). and some U.S. coins too. Many gave the suggestion of Crown size silver is very popular. After 22 years of collecting world coins I discovered that I really like the 18th and 19th century coins designs way more than modern coins. You will have to choose what you really like/enjoy... that way you get more fun out of it. I would recommend to you getting the Krause world coin catalogs from which ever time period you like. I have them from the 17th, 18th, 19th centuries to present day. They are like my coin bibles. I like doing research on others CT members coins they show here. You can also go page by page to see which coins get your attention.

As others have stated you need to look around and find the things that interest you. If you depend on others your interest in collecting will be short lived. Or in other words... do whatever floats your boat.

Canada and Australia are a good place to start. Try to only get the circulation coinage as both countries produce loads of NCLT junk

I think it's might be better to look at what budget you are willing to spend. Some of the projects especially Dansco world coin albums that I started did not look like it would be expensive, only to realise years later that some are hitting four figure territory. I just blew it on a couple of coins and I don't think I'll make any purchases for quite a while...

Follow your heart. Look at everything. Go through coin books, auction catalogs and web sites. Check out some history books and start going to coin shows when this becomes possible again. Soon you will find yourself narrowing your interests to more specific collecting themes. If you are like many of us the process never ends.

Great advice. Collect what you like and what interests you. Like I did with stamps, maybe consider the country or countries your ancestors came from. Or collect a country whose language you may have taken in school. That would be a good start. Or collect a period in history that interests you. The possibilities are endless.
