GDJMSP (whose real name was Doug) was the legendary head moderator, day-to-day administrator, and foundational leader of CoinTalk, one of the internet's largest online coin collecting and numismatic forums. [1, 2]
In early July 2026, fellow forum administrators officially announced that Doug passed away in June 2026 after transitioning to live with his sister. [1]
    Who Was Doug (GDJMSP)?
    • Forum Pioneer: Doug was involved with CoinTalk from almost its absolute beginning, serving as a pillar of the community for over two decades. [1, 2]
    • The Backbone of CoinTalk: He managed day-to-day administration, vetted new users, filtered out spammers, and maintained forum discipline. During peak forum traffic years (circa 2014), his moderation work was essentially a full-time job. [1, 2]
    • A Numismatic Expert: He amassed an incredible 39,000+ post count over his life, regularly sharing extensive historical knowledge on everything from world gold pieces to counterfeits and chopmarked coins. [1, 2, 3]
    • Community Mentor: Even after he stopped actively buying and owning coins himself, he spent at least an hour every single morning volunteering on the forum and helping users. [1]
    • Signature Look: Within the community, he was affectionately recognized by his distinct avatar featuring a hat and glasses. [1]
His passing marks the end of an era for the coin collecting community, where he is remembered as a patient mentor and the primary reason the forum remained a safe, well-regulated, and user-friendly destination for numismatists

Hi, Googlebot. Thanks for staying on top of this thread (and, I guess, all other threads). Please try not to crush the server again while you're doing it, though.

I have not been able to find an obituary. He lead quite an interesting life until he retired due to disability, so I would have loved to read what his family wrote, although I'm not sure we will get an official one.

I could possibly piece on together from all the stories he told me since 2015, but I
am also not sure he would want it publicly shared, so I need to ponder on that one a little while longer.

I have asked Peter to reach out to his family and see if anything was or will be published about Doug's life and death.

Just seeing this. So sad. Doug was a wealth of knowledge here and helped me out a lot. He will be missed not just here on CT but within our hobby.

Just saw this post. Sad news indeed. I've been here since 2008 when I was just getting started and remember quite a few of his posts. As someone who occasionally makes lengthy posts myself, I appreciated his well thought out sometimes lengthy posts back to me on occasion and always read them through. He had a lot of knowledge and often shared it. Some posters liked to argume with him.
I remember he butted heads with a few people even probably me in my younger days. I was looking for some old correspondence and found an old thread of mine he shut down after four pages. I might've got the last thread in about Covid before the topic was banned. For the new members, this was Doug at work:

Now I warn ya folks, and I do mean EVERYBODY, any more threads like this one has been, and the entire subject of discussing the virus will no longer be allowed."

Can you believe we poked fun at him? I mean, only sometimes we did. But still...

Would I get into trouble if I changed my avatar?

Doug was one of the most interesting men I have ever known. Being one of the first to be on the internet, his computer skills were off the chart. Those skills helped him keep CT safe from many problems.
Not very long ago he told me he had never had a cell phone and never would. That may have changed, don't know.

Doug was sad when he had to give up going to the FUN show. Travel and standing for very long was tough. At the last show I remember him coming to, him and I both were having a hard time being on our feet for very long so we hung out in the smoking area outside.
I could not believe how many folks knew Doug and would come by to chat. Lots of pretty ladies. He had fun and I was able to meet some really cool people in the hobby.
