@Stevearino - mend well. Sorry to hear of your woes. :( @Paddy54 has also had some serious health issues of late, so y’all will be in my prayers (literally- not a figure of speech).

I have not seen that particular QuarterNotes issue. At least not yet. The Quarter Master is very generous with his mailings. I shall have to pay more attention to the mail that piles up on the desk. (Ladymarcovan handles the bills, so I have the luxury of occasionally letting my mail stack up, unexamined.)

Well, two goals accomplished: made it up the stairs AND found my Minnesota stamped quarter. "SHOT O' POP" is the counter stamp. My first guess is that in MN we call soda "pop." I would welcome other insights.

Again, I feel honored to have been chosen!

Glad to see you're doing better @Stevearino! If you look at my post on the previous page, my Minnesota quarter is counter stamped "6 OZ COKE". I thought it was easy enough having to do with the old Coca Cola bottles but The QuarterMaster has told me in an email that there is a second, humorous, way of interpreting the inscription and that, taken together with your coin "these two coins might be easier to solve than individually".

So we have "SHOT O' POP" and "6 OZ COKE". I'm at work now but welcome all on these pages to help with the sleuthing on this!

My dad is very active on this board and since I've been coming to his house more often during Covid, I'm learning all the nuances of him being in this online forum...including this quarter guy! I asked him how I can be apart of the "Quarter Notes" club and he had no idea. I asked him how the "Quarter Master" got his address. Again, he didn't know! What?! Quarter Master--come find me! Ha.

This is by far the most interesting thread I've encountered....$50 note? Hit me up?! I wonder what's the purpose of this operation, rather than the identity of the person

Very belated reply to @wrexx's old post: I happen to be a CoinTalk moderator, and I do not know the true identity of the mysterious "Quarter Master" behind the Quarter Notes, Ltd. counterstamp program. Maybe the top admins (Doug or Peter) do- or maybe they don't- but if so, that's kept secret from the rest of us. (Or maybe even one of them is the Quarter Master. Hmm...)

How does he know who to send stuff to, and get their addresses? That's the enduring mystery, be it intriguing to some, or suspicious to others. Me, I say go with the flow- it seems like good, harmless fun to me.

Obviously the Quarter Master follows this site closely, but as far as him having access to the private information of its users, I am unaware of that. I certainly am not privy to such information myself (member's addresses, etc.), despite being a moderator. Only the very top admins have access to that in the server, I am sure. And I'm dubious about whether they would share such information with a third party. Seems unlikely to me.

The Quarter Master knew I had some of my own custom elongated coins made. He knows I run giveaways on the Contests forum here. He knew when I was laid off early in the pandemic and sent me several hundred dollars in cash, anonymously tucked into his mailings. He also seems to have taken a shine to @paddyman98, the author of this thread, and I find that interesting because based on the content of past mailings, the Quarter Master seems to me to have some connection to Puerto Rico (despite the PR return address on his mailings being fake). And @paddyman98 is of Puerto Rican heritage, I believe. Is that a coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.

The Quarter Master is plainly perceptive, that's all I can say.

Oh, BTW- I just posted another giveaway of his product. There will be more to come. He sent me two rolls of assorted counterstamped quarters a while back (plus a ridiculous amount in paper US currency to compensate me for shipping the giveaways).

Garlicus Debt is dumb, cash is king.

I looked at my profile here on CT, and my address isn’t listed, nor do I remember having to provide it when I signed up a number of years ago, so I am guessing that neither Peter nor Doug are Quarter Master, unless they had another way to get people’s addresses, such as through messages between members who dealt with each other or won a contest, where addresses would have been exchanged.

Our profiles may list our place of residence, but that is not always the exact city/town, and may be as general as the state we live in, so some serious detective work would be needed to track down people’s addresses, and a P.O. Box would be even harder, unless it is attached to some form of property that would receive a tax bill.

That being said, if Quarter Master wants to try and track me down, and gift me with a V75 quarter (or other quarter), to show his/her ability to do so, especially since I limit my personal info here, and online, in general, I extend that challenge, lol. Bonus points if it is sent to my home address and not my PO Box, since I never use my home address.

@lordmarcovan did you ever send QM elongated coins, to your knowledge, or were they just used in a contest per QM’s request? The reason I ask, is because @brianwarttman, whose name didn’t show up to tag, but whose profile can be viewed, stated that he received one of them from QM. Also, the only posts of his that I see are related to these coins. First to post a Michigan J Frog coin and second to say he received a quarter and one of LM’s elongated coins from QM. Could Brian Warttman be QM, and is that his real name? Doing some sleuthing of my own, based on Warttman saying the his J Frog coin was found in change in Littleton, CO, I did find a 29yo with that name in Littleton on LinkedIn, so maybe he isn’t QM, but you never know, lol. Maybe that is how QM found him.

I didn’t seriously think Doug or Peter was the Quarter Master (that musing was a bit tongue-in-cheek), but the riddle has me guessing just like everyone else. And yet I kind of like the enigma and would be a bit sad if the Quarter Master were unmasked publicly. (Privately, sure- I’d be curious to know, but then some of the savor of the mystery would be lost.)

To my way of thinking, if there’s some benevolent, Batmanlike do-gooder out there doing whimsical anonymous deeds, and spreading fun (not to mention ca$h!) around, one respects his anonymity if he wants it that way. I’m happy to play along.

In answer to your question, I once sent a set of my elongated coins to CT member @JBK, who is mentioned in the Quarter Notes literature, under assumption that he might be the Quarter Master, but I later read a denial somewhere that this is not the case. And as I recall, this was in courteous reciprocation to a QN mailing I had already received, so the QM knew my address well before that.

Oh- and not even the admins here- even Doug or Peter- can read members’ private messages, I am told. Those are truly private.

I don't know who QuarterMaster is, and I'm not particularly anxious to find out. If and when, he or she, wants any of us to know their identity, I'm sure they will step forward and speak out.
Personally, I enjoy the word games, the puzzles, the brain teasers this person gives to us, and hope to see many more. Not only are they fun, but I get a certain sense of accomplishment from solving them correctly.
The QuarterMaster has been very generous to several members of Coin Talk !!
    That
is the QM's choice. I personally don't think that requesting money from the QM is becoming to either our site or our membership.
A gift is best considered a gift when it is actually that, and NOT when it is chased after.
If the QM wanted to offer prizes for solving his conundrums, that would be a different thing entirely.

I'm looking forward to the next group of riddles.

I agree wholeheartedly, but also don’t think there’s anything wrong with people semi-jokingly declaring, “Hey, Quarter Master! Sign ME up for some of that free cash!” Because that’s a pretty natural response to the tales some of us luckier recipients have told. :greedy::)

Random thought: I wonder how many people have tossed their Quarter Notes mail out as unopened junk mail, thereby unwittingly consigning an unknown quantity of counterstamped quarters and US currency to the landfill or recycling center?:nailbiting:

As previously mentioned, I once left a QN mailing shuffled in a pile of unsorted (mostly junk) mail for weeks, until I got around to tidying up. It later proved to have a quarter and a $100 bill inside.

Oh- PS- the Quarter Master is a “he” for sure. There’s a photo of him in his workshop out there in circulation (face scribbled out), with self-deprecating humor about how much he fits the stereotypical demographic of so many of us numismatic types. White males of a certain age. Seems a lot of us fit the profile of being coin collectors (or serial killers).

Well, I just received correspondence from the Quartermaster today in the mail, I'd suspect most everyone on the mailing list should get a letter here shortly depending on distance and post office.
My postmark is Sept. 29th, and it's Oct. 2nd.

It's a puzzle type thing this time. Mine is a Pennsylvania State Quarter with "BILL'S TREES" counterstamped on it. It must mean something, and I'm gonna dig to find out but nothing comes to mind immediately, it's a tough one for sure. The only thing I know about from Pennsylvania is Perogis. Lol.

Just googled "Bill's Trees" and came up with several tree trimming services in PA. I doubt that's it haha.

    But then there is this:
400 year old oak tree named "William Penn"

You could be right 400 year old white oak named "William Penn", Pennsylvania Quarter, Bill is short for William, Penn short for Pennsylvania,, but Its just one tree and the counterstamp is "Bill's Trees" so I don't think this is quite right.....
Perhaps the answer is "The great oak farm" the 10 acre preserve the tree is on.... perhaps the answer is "Penns Trees", theres 100 surviving trees identified in Pennsylvania from when William Penn arrived to America in 1682, but that's too close to the counterstamp and would make it too easy I think.... maybe the answer is William Penn in general? I'm out of guesses but you are right, I don't think it's the tree services that come up first.

Yeah, it's a rough one, some of his clues are obscure, and some are simple. This is a hard one and could even be like a bill they passed to plant trees, and either looking for the bill name or type of trees planted. This is an enigma for sure. Hahaha.

I'm just glad the dude is still around and kicking to be honest, I think the last letter I got was around December and I was thinking/wondering the other day if quartermaster is OK. So nice to have gotten a letter for that reason alone so I don't have to ponder what happened.
I steer clear of the contests section or I would have known lordMarcoven was running counterstamped contests and all was good with the QM.

Well he's active again so there's that! :D

Well, based upon the letter that accompanied the quarter I received today, the person that correctly unscrambles the riddle has a prize coming…… And I am betting @furryfrog02 is on to something.
