To be honest, I don’t even use cash anymore, with all the points and
    expanded coverages you receive
it doesn’t make sense, my AMEX
Platinum card is my go to card for
    just about everything :)

Eh that card has a pretty high annual fee.

I refuse to pay more than $100/year for a credit card annual fee.

With 2% cashback on so many cards there is no reason for that kind of annual fee. Especially since the perks are kinda lame.

The AMEX Platinum is $695 a year but that is easily absorbed, through there 4x
points program which realized $1,100 in free hotel stays plus another $800 in upgrades plus another $200 in dinning credits and another $375 dollars in
uber rides, plus there buyer protection plan cant be beat ! I pay all my monthly
bills with my AMEX, Electric, gas, water and fuel for my car, the points add up fast
they even have a pubs at major airports for platinum members, so you get back double what you put in to it so its actually a no brainer, and this is with out even
trying if I travelled more this would easily be triple.

Yeah I know I have an AMEX card myself but mine has $0 fees but I am aware of the Platinum & Gold card fees & perks.

They still don’t seem worth it to me personally.

The annual fee is $695 and the Uber credits and dining credits provided don’t even come close to the fee paid.

I guess if someone travels ALOT it could pay off but speaking as someone who stays at 2 hotels per year max I don’t think it’s worth it for non-travelers.

The Capital One Venture and Chase Sapphire Preferred are both pretty close to the AMEX Platinum except with $95 fees instead of $695.

The $600 difference would be more than enough to pay for the Uber & dining credits.

That depends, like I said you have to use the card, I also have the blue, white, magnet, Delta Airlines Platinum and one of my favorites is the Hilton Honors
card, more perks, really like the Hampton inn when I travel :)

Different level of perks, I have been a member of AMEX for 37 years ! so its
worked forr me just fine and the American Express brand for travel is second
to none, plus I love the look on people faces when I lay that heavy metal
card down, when you present that card, instant repeat and recognition :)

There are a lot of heavy cards around now though.

Apple has one of Titaniun and the Chase Sapphire and Capital One Venture are metal too.

I just don’t like that AMEX tends to charge more fees and have higher interest rates.

And how much have you spent on annual fees over those 37 years?

I mean, it's got to come down to a simple calculation of benefits vs. fees. I don't doubt that you come out ahead. We don't travel much, so AMEX has never really popped up on our radar, and probably wouldn't be a good choice for us.

Omg I just read that Imperial Russia did indeed strike platinum coins for circulation because they were afraid selling it all on the open market would’ve caused a crash in the price of platinum.

    But it wasn’t pure platinum.

They made a 3 ruble, 6 ruble, and 12 ruble platinum coin.

For comparison the 10 ruble gold coin (called a “chervonet”) was about 8 grams of gold and the 1 ruble silver coin was about the size of a Morgan Dollar. Like most unit sized silver coins of the time such as the British crown and Spanish Dollar.

Not only a high fee, but AMEX is not accepted by many sellers. I use both Capital One and Discover Card for most things, as they pay back 5% on some items and no annual fees.

I disagree, AMEX is accepted by most merchants, I should know I use it everyday
yes there are some that dont accept it. but thats definitely in the minority AMEX
caters to the world traveler and the benefits are huge ! went to Maul pre pandemic
and got a free 2x upgrade from a garden view to a beach view that one perk paid
    my entire yearly fee :)

I have the Discover, Visa and MasterCards as well but there rarely used, I only
use those if I have a major purchase like Refridgerator, washer, A/C unit stuff
like that where I know I am going to carry a balance.

Just like anything else you have to use it to make it pay for you after 37 years
I think it works really well :)

I agree with the exact opposite of everything you just stated.

Wait. You're buying gold, speculating on BTC -- and carrying credit card balances?

What does that have to do with the
    credit card discussion…LOL

so I guess your trying to flex ?
    I just bought a 1947 50 Peso
for $2,700 and yes that’s my
money to…., very rarely by graded
though, premiums are way to high !

What credit card discussion? The thread topic is platinum, which I think is a poor investment. No flexing here...I just don't always agree with some of the statements you make.

The AMEX one...LOL. but no worries, this would be a boring place if everybody
    thought the same.

I won't argue with that...but I do have a PF Platinum 1 oz coin which I compare to a lump of coal and for as long as I've owned it, the the value has only tanked, but the coal may actually keep me warm some day.:angelic:

    YOU JUST SAID:
If replacing a fridge or washer forces you to carry a balance on a card... well, you do you, I guess, but I sure wouldn't be putting $2700 into a gold coin if it meant I wouldn't have $1000 (give or take) should I need to cover an appliance replacement.
