I bought my 1st & only 1 ozt. Libertad a year or so ago and I was surprised how much I liked it. It's just one in a collection of different bullion coins from various countries.
I have 3 now myself, that was one of my New Year goals for collecting coins, to add more Mexican and Spanish silver coinage. So far ive acquired 2 of the small Libertads 82 and 86 i believe, one of the newer larger Libertads a 2009 i believe. Ive also purchased 2-1933 Un pesos and 1 - 1947 Cuauhtemoc 5 Pesos coin. I am looking at an 1894 8 Reales, and my last large purchase on Mexican silver this year will be a 1750-1760s era 8 Reales Pillar Dollar. I have a line on one that was dug up here locally from 1752 that I like, but not sure about how im gonna get that one yet, the guy wants $250 for it.
To be honest, I never realized until recently how beautiful mexican coinage can be, nor did i realize the relative history with our coins. Not to mention alot of their designs reflect our same ideals like liberty and freedom.
One thing i didnt like though was the fact that the new Libertads are like 40mm diameters and their Air-Tites wont fit in my Air-Tite tube capsule. I bought all 4 Air-Tite tubes from JPs Corner so I could make sure i had the right ones and that dang 40 MM Air-tite with the black ring will not fit in my largest Air-Tite tube, kind of frustrating
I was waiting to see if urbanchemist replied to this thread. I only recently saw one in hand when I did some pictures for urban. I think it's a great looking coin for sure.
I just got an onza, and found that it fits in a silver dollar flip. I stuck it in a page with other Mexican coinage I have. I really like old Mexican coins, and have a bunch of old 8 reales from 1801 until the early 1900's. Some have holes in them, but I like them anyway. I have one with lots of chop marks on it from being over in the orient. They are awesome coins.
it is a beauty. i wish i would have been able to keep it. that was my intentions. but bills gotta be paid
I think maybe you were better off. That blackness has me worried. About 8 o clock looks like the start of corrosion to my eyes. Too bad they didn't make a Libertad obverse and a Onza reverse. I just love the Onza reverse, as should any collector of Mexican coins.
I just found a 1978 in my roll of balance scale onzas, that mintage if I recall is quite low. Are they worth any more?? I know the 1949 is but not sure on the 1978.
Check out completed ebay listings... better yet don't they're all over the place. From $32 to over $50
So basically Its luck of the draw I guess. Its the only one I have and really not interested in selling it. Whats up George..havent been on here a while... Did you ever make it out to the out door antique markets to check out the coin guys there?? The one in Irvine is this Sunday..i'll be there and sometimes there is a couple of coin guys there.
What's up! I have been going to the rosebowl regularly and I since I'm a vehicle-less teen I asked my mom to take me there but she insisted on walking around Orange County instead.
