Not to digress, but I am curious about something I read but cannot remember clearly.

When the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple was reopened in 2011 or so, thousand of tiny "coins" (rattī weights? = 0.12125 gr??) were found in the vaults. What are those called?

I also see the Gold Quarter Fanam listed as "the world's smallest circulating coin" (0.08 - 0.1 gram) but this may have been a different weight standard & coin, etc. (?)

You can buy 1/20 or 1/25 oz coins. Grab yourself a Krause world coins guide and take a look at auctions of world gold/platinum coins in ebay.

    Here are few examples:

I think the smallest gold pieces come from India (Fans).

In general, small gold carries a stiff premium when compared to larger sizes. Of course, you can sometimes recoup that premium when and if you sell, but that is not a guarantee. APMEX and similar firms sell substantial amounts of gold at fairly reasonable prices, but I would suggest you attempt to buy at least a quarter-ounce at a time in order to reduce the premium. This will be more difficult and, heck, it might be impossible, but it is what I would advise.

where did you try to sell them and not have success? They sell like hotcakes on ebay and I'm sure you could sell them at a premium to spot on any forum......

Small coin high premium over double spot value, even more when factoring in shipping. Unless you buy this series to personally collect I would avoid them, as ever getting that premium back is unlikely. As others have mentioned before if you want gold sub $100 buy Mexican dos peso's they are smaller than a dime, but they are gold and they can be had for little to no premium if you shop around.

If you are buying small gold and want a low premium, take a look at French Roosters or 20 Swiss Francs. They cost about $340 currently and are about the size of a nickel (but thinner). They are easy to buy and sell. You can find them at most coin shows so you don't have to pay S&H and should meet your quarterly saving goal quite nicely.

A "Premium" Coin That Easily Sells!!

I believe you misunderstood the post by Fatima, quote: "I would not recommend the small 1g or similar "bars" (more like wafers). They are extremely difficult to sell after the fact."

The "1g or similar bars" are not generally good Gold resale items. You however, are quite correct about the 1/10 oz. Gold Eagle. Tulving recently had the best price I could find for investors, which I assist in locating products. His buy price was 6% over spot, and sell was 13% over spot when buying a minimum of 100 coins. He no longer offers a buy/sell of this product, I suspect because of depletion by buyer demand. The two sites for which links are supplied in this thread (including US Mint), also indicate "unavailable".

I've recommended the acquisition of these coins for interested investors in the past, personally purchasing the proof condition or TPG slabbed coins. I funded interested investors of small lots in the past by purchasing large quantities, and reselling them at an appreciable discount to Apmex.

The 1/10 oz. AGE having a diameter of 13mm (~1/2 inch), the size of a U.S. $1 Gold coin, smaller than a Silver U.S. half-dime, is a very desired commodity for novice Gold buyers. I recently had 30+ coins and some Mexican Gold 2 Peso which I offered on Craigslist in 9 coin lots at a 9% premium above spot, and was inundated with calls, selling all in the first day of posting.

In the recent past I would have recommended buying the 1/4 oz. AGE which could be obtained at ~6% above spot, but now appear to have comparable to the past 1/10 oz. AGE premiums.

"Junk Silver" purchased at "spot" currently appears to be a more desirable "investment". JMHO :thumb:
