Excellent point. Did not think of that. Luckily, I will most likely never be able to afford gold so I'll just stick to the time machine idea.

fatima, excellent observation. It is not what you post, but the content of your post. Anyone can take Wikipedia's info and make it into what they want. Now, back to the original question.

For which question it's indispensable to define the nature of the emergency. In an Argentina or Zimbabwe situation you might actually prefer to have your bullion out of the country altogether. If you're trying to hedge against a total collapse of the banking system that prevents payments from going through, then you get to have fun with at-home storage ideas like filling the cylinders of a scrap V-8 engine. Obvious downside is that garages aren't secure and the engine would have some salvage value to someone.

Pull out molding along your floor, and there might be enough of a gap between the drywall and the floor to slide coins or thin bars into.

I keep mine in a safety deposit box,in a bank, where my girl works. I feel its alot safer there instead of in my apartment.

The 1933 Double Eagles weren't declared illegal to own until the 1940s. Also, collectors were allowed to keep coins during the gold recall.

If "Anarchy" happens getting your gold will be the least of your worries!
