Here's my list of bullion coins I have/collect, in order of my preference:

American Silver Eagle - Made in USA and beautiful classic design

Mexican Libertad - Elegant, great symbology, and love the reverse with the historic coats of arms

Canadian Maple Leaf - .9999 pure and beautiful in its simplicity

Chinese Panda - Wonderful new design every year, never disappoints

Australian Kook - Interesting (not always wonderful) new design every year, beautiful rendition of Queen Elizabeth II

Australian Koala - New design every year, attractive, interesting but Kooks have more character

British Britannia - Beautiful mythical designs, especially on 2010 coin, and large rendition of QE II

Austrian Philharmonic - Nice solid design, especially of the musical instruments, but not very exciting

  5. OK, I already said the ASE was my favorite but you forgot one of my new favorites: Russian St. George the Victorious. This silver bullion series started in 2009. I have both the 2009 and 2010. Both are tough to find (especially the 2010) even on ebay. :) TC

    #1 Libertad
    #2 ASE
    #3 Kookaburra
    #4 Britannia
#5 Canada's Wildlife series! (If they are all as beautiful as the first one even though the design was previously used)

My favorite bullion coin I have is a 2010 5oz Proof Libertad I just bought a couple weeks ago.

  7. I only have a few different 1oz bullion coins, but I would have to say the older Libertads are my favorite design.

ahearn, i like your coin descriptions. I'm with you on the eagles, libertads and pandas. The only maple leaf I have is the 2010 Piedfort. I just purchased the 2010 Australian kangaroo at sunset -- it is a simple and stunning coin. Also, I am in the process of getting the 2010 Tuvalu Battle of Marathon anniversay piedfort.

TC, I like the St. George coin. I may have to find 1 of those. I wish they produced them in proof, but, oh well.

SilverCeder, I have a 2010 5 ounce libertad also and it is near the top of my list for being my favoite. It is an outstanding coin. I wish I could find a bezel so I could wear it around town. Just kidding.

I forgot to mention the 2006 Reverse Proof Eagle is worth a look also, if you wnat something a little out of the ordinary.

Haha! I'm just glad it came in an air-tite. Might be hard to find that size..... Now that I have that 5ozer though, it makes me want to start to collect the ATB series.........

I have been interested in those since they were announced, as I am addicted to our national parks, but since the Mint has messed around with this issue, they are a little too pricey for me. Hopefully, the cost will decline after the honeymoon is over. Sigh.

I took my libertad out of the air-tite once, just once, because I had to actually touch it. It was a great feeling.

I took one of my 2010 ASE proofs out of its air-tite because I couldn't tell if the coin was damaged or not. Turned out to be a piece of crap in there and the coin was fine. Couldn't bring myself to touch it though...... lol

Were all of your 2010 proofs okay? I ordered 4; 3 were fine, but 1 had visible milk spots on the eagle side. I returned it and didn't ask for a replacement.

I only ordered 2 but both were free of the dreaded milk spots luckily.

That's good. I know someone who received an NGC Proof 69 that had spotting on it. Either the grader was hung over or spotting is not a factor at the 69 level.

Libertads, ASEs, 20 balboa 3.85oz sterling coins.
Also have some morgans, mercury dimes, and silver halves but I'm not buying anymore unless the price is way low.

I like the Austrian Philharmonic. Their orchestra is synonymous with their country. Just like their Vienna Boys Choir. It did take several purchases however, to find one that didn't have a spotting problem. I don't think their quality control is that good. Next in line would be the Libertads followed by the ASE.

Thanks for the heads up on the Russian bullion, TopCat. I just bought a St. George on eBay. I didn't realize that so many countries all over the world have their own bullion coins. I'm used to just seeing the usual suspects at coin shows....ASE's, Maples and Libertads....

Small world. I purchased a 2009 St. George yesterday also thanks to TopCat's post. I'm waiting for a 2010 to become available. I like the "off the beaten track" stuff like this.

  21. Happy to turn you on to these. The mintage of the 2009 was 280,000 and increased to 500,000 in 2010. However, you see relatively few of these for sale on the Internet (even ebay) compared to other bullion coins. Some of the sellers comment that they are hard to get as many do not leave Russia but that could just be a sales pitch of course. I just like the design and may try to build a year set going forward. I will let you know if/when I see any 2011s. :) TC
