I took 50% of my savings a few months ago and bought 100 silver bullion coins.
My banker tried to talk me out of it, instead thought I should buy his Mutual Funds which have a capital gains tax of up to 50% when I sell.
Of course, this idea was good for him and the government but not for me.
He mentioned that most clients fill out a form before investing. This form, was to find out how smart or stupid I was and cover his butt if something went wrong. This information would have been to his advantage. The less I knew, the more he could take advantage of me.
Needless to say, I didn't fall for his BS and ordered my coins which I am sure are outperforming his mutual funds.

I might consider adding a little more gold to my Ishare account with my broker. Gold has balanced my losses in the stock market through this latest ride. I might try and see if I can gain a little besides, with a modest new purchase. Maybe add 25% to my existing account. That will put me around 7% to 8% in gold PM's in my total portfolio. That doesn't seem too risky.

With the constant moves in gold and silver, anything I type here will be out of date almost automatically.

That said, I'm curious about something. If you have 5% of your net worth in common date ASE's and 5% in various collectible coins (everything from well circulated/common date items like 1964 JFK halves to MS65 graded Lafayette dollars), how would you answer the question? In that case, would you have 10% of your portfolio in bullion or 5% in bullion and 5% in art/collectibles?

My general rule of thumb is to keep less than 10% of my money in any particular asset. I wouldn't put more than 10% of my IRA into one particular stock, and I tend to look at precious metals (gold/silver/platinum) as a single bet rather than multiple different investments.

I would consider .999 fine as bullion, anything less as a collectable.
