good luck if looking for pre-64 Ag coinage in today's circulating coinage! it seems that those who roll search do better with half dollars moreso than dimes/quarters/dollars. Obtain a Red Book to assist with mintage numbers. The best to you if you become a 'hunter'
About the only circulating silver coins I find today are the FDR dimes, but only about one a year. And I hate the FDR dimes.
You might get lucky and find some old Peace or Morgans in bank rolls. I have read stories on here of people finding them. The amount of silver in a 90% Silver Dollar is more than twice the silver in two 90% halves.
I don't think so. The half has a melt value of 8.55 right now, the Dollar is 18.28. It is over twice that of a half dollar but not two of them.
Just yesterday Germany issued its last two "high silver content" €10 collector coins. Those have always been locally available at face, but as the metal value (they are Ag 925) has come close to the face value, next year's pieces will be 625 only. Actually that (Ag 625) is what the country started with in 1952, but for a couple of years "in between" they had more. The Austrian €5 (Ag 800) and €10 (Ag 925) coins are available at face within the country too. The same applies to the Swiss 20 fr coins (Ag 835). Christian
TWICE as much silver as TWO 90% halves?? I don't think so. 90% Silver Dollars = 0.77344 oz silver 90% Silver Halves = 0.36169 oz silver A 90% Silver Dollar has more than twice the silver in one 90% Silver Half and a 90% Silver Dollar has more silver than two 90% Silver Halves but a 90% Silver Dollar does not have more than twice the silver as TWO 90% Silver Halves.
In my opinion, as far as circulating coins go, you are more likely to find silver in pre-'64 dimes. This is the focus of my roll searching. I havent been too lucky yet, but this is my logic. If you want to do roll searching, you have to think about what is available. Most banks do not have halves or large dollars on hand. If they did, then I would think these would be the best shot at finding silver. Quarters have been flooded with the statehood issues, so not much chance there. There have been over 180 different quarter issues since 1964, so I count them out as flooded with clad coinage. Dimes however, have had only 90 issues since 1964, and given the unavailability in my market of large dollars and halves, this is the most likely source for silver coinage. I know it is still an unlikely source, given the mintages, but to offset that and with my belief that alot of old coinage is enterning the bank market, I only search hand-rolled rolls. I hope this helps, or maybe someone has an opinion on it that may change my mind, thanks!
Though I suppose it's getting rather thin now, the best chances for finding silver coinage in circulation (more or less) is to go to the bank and buy unopened rolls/bags/boxes of 1/2s. Since they no longer actively circulate 1/2s this is where people still find silver at a rate that makes it kinda worthwhile. When you are done searching, dump the coins at a different bank, rinse and repeat. The other option is to ask if there are any home rolled coin rolls that have been deposited that are still at the bank. This sometimes works, but most of the tellers will search these and swap them out for their own good.
