It's so not paranoia, but thinking around one's chosen situation to protect themselves in the event of the unexpected. Such scams exist so don't fool yourself to think they cannot be pulled on you too. As you can see all worked out in this case, thankfully. However, you should always be aware of your surroundings. Security is not guaranteed-- for either party. Be it a set up or not, a stranger/passer-by could just as easily have seen them handling a large bar of silver in a wide open parking lot and ripped them both off. I assume you did pull the bar out and examine it in the open, not buying the thing sight unseen (had you there would be little point meeting in person.) Taking your eyes off your surrounding to examine the bar it time enough for someone to do something or step into take advantage. I would not have met in an open parking lot, but then I wouldn't have agreed to do a deal in this manner either. Security should always be first and just toting a weapon along is not enough.

I carry my gun all the time to my banks. Most of the time concealed but it is legal here with a permit to carry open or concealed. Only criminals can carry guns in New York.

Just imagine how few successful robberies there'd be if there were more people carrying concealed in banks. :)

Anybody in New York can carry a gun with a permit, so no def not just criminals, I carry one legally if I want to. That was a moronic statement

I have a friend who lives there and he has a clean record and served six years in the Air Force with me. He can't get a permit because in NYC only rich and famous people can.

Only 5,500 robberies last year. Seems like more than not too many to me.

Read FAQ on Language usage please-unnecessary, my sister just got her permit 2 weeks ago she lives in nyc, I don't live in the city I live in the country, and when I go to NYC to visit I am always allowed to carry my gun. I have lived in New York for 30 years and my dad is a New York city cop, I think I know if you can get a permit

Plaxico Burress is rich and famous..he carried a gun without a permit into a nightclub....what happened to him? that's right he is in prison. I guess that defeats your statement

I live in mid-michigan. Not a lot of crime around here. I spoke to the guy on the phone and I picked the spot. He came alone and I came alone. Turns out we bank at the same place. I went in to get the cash and he went in to get the bar. I hit the bar with a small hammer and she sang like a canary. The transaction took place and then we walked across the street to have a cup of Joe. He's a Korean War Veteran. He's got some pre-1933 gold he may want to sell. I told him he has my number.

I agree with Sampson. You guys went a little overboard with the saftey issue.

I'm glad this worked out well and in a friendly manner for both buyer and seller.

However, only in retrospect can you claim the safety issue was overboard.

It was completly overboard you guys were all making up this crazy scenarios that would happen in a movie, is that a way to live your life?If we all worried about what could happen if you do something nobody would ever leave their homes. When I go to the coin shop this afternoon should a not buy a coin because I may get ambused on he way out of the store? Maybe I will bring 5 people with me to the bank to deposit my paycheck because hey who know's the bank might het robbed when i am there

Krispy, there is always a risk buying PM's. That's just the way it is. I've been around a while and a little common sense and judgment goes a long way.

It is much more dangerous to buy a 100 oz silver bar at a coin show or a brick and mortar store. Criminals scout those places out and follow people home. I also don't want to pay the ridiculous premium/shipping of online sites, or companies who advertise in magazines. Advertising costs money....and they pass that on to their customers. Plus, if you buy from one of those companies they have your address....and the government can find out pretty quickly who owns what.

I also forgot to mention that before the deal, I hit a tot lot up the street (metal detecting) and scored a .925 silver ring! Good day today.....

Sampson, you can disagree without being disagreeable, my man. There is a lot of experience and knowledge on this forum. Don't go out of your way to alienate anyone, or you could miss out!

Honestly, this is not life imitating art, this is not a movie scenario as you are interpreting our cautionary comments to be media driven paranoia. Things like this have happened, victims' experiences have proven it. Life is inherently filled with risks. The more factors you apply to the situations that you involve yourself in the greater the likelihood of something happening. Yes, you should consider the risks that may surround you but not to the point of inaction. Yes, you should live your life freely and go outside your home to do so. Yes, you should support your local B&M and Yes, you may be confronted outside of that B&M. 5 people may not be enough to protect your paycheck on the way to make a deposit and the bank may be robbed while you are there too, but my point is that you cannot control these situations-- they do happen. You don't have to be so dismissive that such things exist as a threat because you determine a few words of others to be overly cautionary, depending upon the scenarios you involve yourself with, it is not beyond chance of occurring to you too. Just be safe, then double check that you are. :thumb:
