US State Quarter proof sets...

ebay is currently inundated with silver 50 state proof sets. From 1999 to present, seems that the mint is going to honor every state park and possibly every crossroads to continue producing these quarters in .90 silver.

With the zombie/end of the world crowd bidding junk silver to approx. $14.50 - $15 per $1 face value, the proof quarters seem to be quite a bargain, (excluding the 1999 set which sells for $75-$100).

I'm fond of the fact that I can buy these proof coins for less than pre '64 junk and generally for less percentage mark up that ASE's. Feel that I'm buying silver at a reasonable premium and a possible chance for numismatic appreciation in the future. Am I totally off base?

State quarters are modern junk that would take a long time to appreciate

Yep, very low mintage on these silver proofs. If you can get them at close to melt, why not?

Shhhh! This has been my secret for quite some time now. About half of my silver bullion is in the form of 2000 and up silver proofs.

The only drawback I can see is that you'll have to convince people they are 90% silver and not clad. Pre-65 coins are widely known to be 90% silver. People might look at you funny when you tell them your 2007 Montana state quarter is 90% silver. "See, look at the edge, it's silver, really, trust me..."

Shouldn't have to worry about that down the road, as most of the demand for these should come from collectors, with I hope, a hefty numismatic premium.

Meh - I'm not expecting them to appreciate based on numismatic value. I bought them for their silver content. If they do appreciate, that's great of course! But if not, I'm not out anything I wouldn't have been out buying any other form of silver that wouldn't have been nearly as shiny. :D

Correct. The silver proof box sleeve will have the word silver in it. Here's a thumbnail picture from an ebay auction for a non-silver listing for 2011.

And one from a silver set.

Both of these are 2011, but only one is silver. :)
