One thing i shouldve maybe mentioned. Anacs address was right here in my hometown of Columbus Oh. Until they changed owners and move to Colorado in 2007. For that reason, i believe i get the privilege to see more of the small white holders in-hand than most. Maybe 2 or 3 times more, than someone who lives in Washington or Florida. We have retirees here, who started selling off their collections up at the coin show. So i get to see plenty of, fresh to market Anacs white holders here month to month. Not trying to brag or nuthin, but we have Leroy van Allen and Coin World, here in the great state of Ohio too
Most people say "Buy the coin, not the holder". This is true, but there are certainly times where I would "Buy the coin for the holder". There are a number holders on my list that I want to own. Some will probably never happen such as the NGC Black or a PCGS Regency, unless of course I happen to spot that middle of the night new listing with a BIN so low that it would make me do the happy dance until the cows come home. LOL
I'm glad someone else addressed this first. There is still and has always been a lot of crap in what is regrettably often simply called "old ANACS" plastic. Kudos to @jtlee321 for acknowledging the fact all of said type should not be placed into the same category.
Oops, i suppose they are still small white holders. Thats what i get for, creating this thread after 2 shots of cucumber vodka, 2 Hamms lights, and 3 corona. I thought at best, this thread would just turn into a big argument. Pretty tame thus far
Ill admit, they do have some nice coins in those holders. I like how silver tones inside of them too, with the golden blue magenta swirl. Drool I guess they take over the 2a slot on my list
@jtlee321 solid expansion of the list! Now I'll have to update my rankings as well. Who is ready for a list of 30+ holders?
Here is the new expanded list: 1. NGC Black (1.0) 2. PCGS Regency 3. White label Rattlers 4. NGC White Label Fatty holders (2.0 and 2.1) 5. Compugrade 6. Hallmark 7. David Hall Numismatics flips 8. PCGS Doily 9. NGC No Line Fatty (all) 10. ANA Holders (small white holder predating Anacs) 11. PCGS Rattlers 12. ANACS Small White holders (earlier ones w/ alpha numeric serial numbers) 13. Anacs Small White holders (all others) 14. PCGS OGH (all) 15. All other NGC 16. All other PCGS 17. PCI Green (10 digit) & PCI Signature Series (like the Tomaska slabs) 18. Anacs Blue...some of these were small white holder that were reholdered 19. Photo Certs (Anacs, PCI, ACG, NCI, INS, INGS, a few others...paper and slabs) 20. Anacs Yellow 21. ICI & NNCS 22. DGS (Dominion....when David Lawrence briefly took over PCI) 23. PCI Gold 24. AGA & IGS (older company) 25. ICG (green label) {earlier holder} 26. ICG (blue holder) {latest holder} 27. Tulving 28. Blanchard 29. Numex 30. ACG (and some of the companies that leased their slabbing service) 31. SEGS 32. MCCS...how can you not like the toilet bowl slab 33. DCGS...I've only seen high grades, but these are cool since they can be displayed (http://www.sampleslabs.com/dcgs.html) 34. "Replica" PCI Green (where they tried to copy the original but luckily messed up the holder so that we can tell them apart) 35. IGA & a few other photo certs that always seem to be over-graded/cleaned 36. NTC 37. New PCI, 38. NuGrade, TruGrade, NNC, SGS, IGS (newer slab), NAS, CCG, etc...other self slabbers...) I may have missed a few, but I'm fairly happy with the list.
Wait, so youre saying DCGS slabs have a kick stand on the reverse??? Woah!!! Thats almost as cutting edge as the 1985 hologram certs. I want one, now, just to display it on my work bench.
It may be worth splitting the white ANACS holders (post-ANA) into the 6 and 7 digits serial number categories. The 6 digit serial numbers date back to the 90’s, but the further you get into 7 digits the closer you get to the blue holders. Perhaps that is where the dreck is more likely to reside?
I am a NGC guy the slabs appeal to me more, Early Soap Box, preferably the smaller holder, green Backs. Fatty's then Rattlers. I have no preference for the order. Next best Buy! is MS BU in a flip.
DGS (Dominion....when David Lawrence briefly took over PCI) Now they knew how to grade and were tough as nails. I still have a couple but most I sent to PCGS and they were upgraded, then sold.
I don't see a point in listing PCGS regency and NGC original black.... There are what... a dozen known? I've only ever seen 1 or 2 of each in the last decade.
There's like a 100 known Regency and like 30 something black slabs assuming their owners didn't do anything stupid with them after winning them
