What would the EAC surface classification be for the OP coin? Perhaps Average Minus but better than “Scudzy”?
I think you did the right thing. Authenticity is key for these. Although CBD is honest/trustworthy, and knowledgeable, the authentication will help later. And the plastic will help keep the coin safe.
I agree with this. Having it slabbed will expand the pool of buyers in the future. The slabbed only people will feel comfortable and the raw people can always crack it out after purchase.
Nice coin. I've got a few "problem" early coppers that aren't a problem for me. Great strike and eye appeal but slightly porous surfaces.
I'm with you on all of this. I like to collect for my own viewing. I prefer seeing fine details, versus smooth surfaces. When you get to older coins, etc and the prices rocket up. The "non details" coins are stratospheric in prices. But the "details" ones are more reasonable and in my opinion better to look at. I would have bought that coin too.
I’d want that details coin in my collection verses a smooth worn problems free coin regardless of cost differential. Good choice in my opinion. Reed
Eye appeal is just whimsy. Remember when the whimsy of the moment for trade dollars was chop marks are bad? Then they were great, the more the better. Remember when "blast white" was right and toning was horrible? Now people pay 10X 20X 30X for "monster toning." If your holding something long term maybe your better off going contrary to the prevailing whimsy? Get in on the ground floor for the new whimsy. At the end of the day your the one paying the money so screw what "they" think.
I couldn’t agree more. Never was one for current fads or whimsy’s. And I never will be one. I’m not a person that buys a coin with its future marketability in mind. I don’t sell coins.... I like what I like and it is what I have liked since I started. There is peace and comfort to be had when you are set in your ways.
You can get sime attractive coins for great prices because of what the plastic says. Buy the coin, not the label. Nice looking piece Randy.
Not necessarily, early copper is a world of it's own but many collectors also shun "slick" peaces or have a minimum grade they will be interested in. Low ball collecting is one thing, but many collectors including advanced ones will avoid slick things. If they're doing a die marriage or it's crazy rare you don't always have the choice
I disagree. Eye appeal isn't whimsy to me. I could care less what the current trend is; that doesn't define eye appeal to me. Eye appeal is what MY eye sees, not someone else's.
Hey Randy, what coin show did you attend? Was it a local one? The only local one I know about is next Saturday at the American Legion in Columbia. Thanks Steve.
So much is horded in collections that at some point I'd anticipate even the details graded, attractive examples like this may increase in price down the road. There are some things that may not be rare, but are "scarce enough" to the point where the average guy is happy to have something in a details grade just to have one. When you get back in these time periods when coins weren't made with modern tech and one cent still had buying power, not a whole lot "made it through". As someone else said, most have problems. I would think if you collect these there's some expectation of imperfection and it's easier to be comfortable with that. I'd love to have this one in my type set.
