    Fantastic OP-score, Ale-G (congrats)

sadly, I don't seem to have any coins minted during this tight-window (*more coins*)

Fantastic coin and awesome write-up. A coin literally steeped in Roman history.

I was very happy just to have the opportunity to bid on it, let alone win it. It fits squarely within the reason why I enjoy Roman Repubican history. To me, this war becomes the jumping-off point between Res Publica to Empire. Because afterwards the Marius-Sulla jealousy-conflict begins, and on into the Imperatoral Era, and then on to the Empire with Augustus...

Have you read Mary Beard's SPQR?

Not yet! It is on my reading list. By pure coincidence, I am reading Cataclysm 90 BC by Philip Matyszak as we speak.

I finished reading the Beard book in December and after seeing your coin I'm going to reread the chapter on the Social War. I can't say enough how much I love your new coin!

Thank you very much. It will be difficult, but I will try to capture the whole series. I also saw a lot of GREAT Roman examples in this thread from this period that I need to capture also! @Bing and @zumbly have awesome examples!

I am enjoying it. I am halfway through. Seems well written and brings different perspectives into the known characters. Short book, but I recommend.

JUST enough wear on the reverse (shoulder, breastplate, pig), to look like it was slid across the bar for some ancient grog. Beautiful...

I won this coin in Gemini VIII. That was an auction we (HJB) ran jointly with Heritage in Chicago at the CICF, so the Internet biding was unusually aggressive. Many of the online bidders were, I suspect, US collectors used to spending five figures for coins, just dabbling in ancients because Heritage was involved. This was April 2011, six months before the big jump in prices for choice RR denarii in RBW I. I fully expected to win this at around $2500 + commission. The Internet bidding shot well past that and I thought I was out at $3400. The auctioneer was about to hammer the lot closed when I yelled out, LOUDLY, before God and the Internet "Oh f-k it!" and raised my hand one last time. The room cracked up, the Internet shut up, and this terrific coin was mine (MINE MINE!)

LOVE the story Phil! Love the coin even more! The best I can ever recall seeing and much better than my example. At least I know where I'll be getting my upgrade some day. ;)

Volodya and Carth: Both are excellent examples, and examples I would aspire to once I hit the lottery. The example I posted cost 2.2% of the price Vol paid. I think I'm just fine for the time being.

These are not rare coins. What is rare is a really nice one. Phil's has a lot going for it in the race for the top spot. I do prefer the die work on Carthago's coin but legend loss on both sides is a lot more of a fault to my eyes than is a little wear. Of course I'm with Bing except mine was 0.67% and too worn to tell if it was a good die or not. I love the sideburn detail on Carthago's coin so I'll be looking for a full legend, full sideburns, clear pig upgrade for mine. The features that make each of us prefer one coin over another is what makes an auction an auction. I pity the poor fools who can buy an MS65 secure in the knowledge their coin is better than an MS64.

Ones with 5 and 9 guys scene are rare.
This 3 men scene if had Italia facing left would be rare too I believe.

The coins of Volodya and Carthago are spectacular. Here is mine:

Bought in 2006 at a show, 40 times its cost would buy Volodya's piece. This is a great hobby because each of us gets to decide between quantity and quality, and each gets to pick what coins are of interest and good enough to buy at their price. I will not compete for the top coins of each type, but I can get interesting coin types in conditions I like--and so can you.
