There are some beautiful Somalia Elephant silver coins on the market, bullion, 1oz, for example the year dated 2009. Unfortunately the Centralbank of Somalia, the one and only authority to mint and print money... said "This is NO LEGAL TENDER and there is NO AUTHORISATION" There is a rumour that a German coin dealer made these coins... see: http://www.bilder-space.de/upload/20.05pLyCOME9B4jvwRm.jpg found here: http://www.muenzauktion.info/auction/index.php?lang=en
From what I have read about this in German forums, it was Emporium in Hamburg that had a contract with somebody supposedly representing the government of Somalia (or whatever is left of it), and apparently the Bavarian state mint in Munich then produced these pieces. http://www.muenzauktion.info/forum/show_id.php?forum=Muenzauktion&id=38648 http://www.emuenzen.de/forum/auslae...staaten-und-kommerzprodukte-7.html#post590942 Christian
nice, but FALSE If the central banks statement is right: Nice, but FALSE Produced in a German mint: you can ask them: E-mail: poststelle@hma.bayern.de produced here: http://www.hma.bayern.de/home_e.htm
Don't think there is anything wrong with the Zambia pieces. Also keep in mind that the ones "from" Somalia are actually 1 oz silver each. The difference is that in the case of the Zambia coins, some distributor got the OK from the Zambian government to issue/sell them. In the case of the Somalia pieces we do not know who authorized this piece. Christian
this is bullion after all right? if they do turn out to be not authorized, I would want them even more.
Interesting - the Zambia pieces seem to be in the same category as the ones "from" Somalia. Gerhard Schön (catalog author) only lists the 5000 kwacha piece (1 oz), and he just wrote in a German forum http://www.emuenzen.de/forum/litera...um-schoen-37-auflage-2009-a-3.html#post595788 that according to what he was told by the central bank, the others are not authorized issues. That does not affect the silver content of course. Christian
