" It's bound to happen IMO"

"Not sure what's hard to understand. There will come a tipping point where enough people understand that these coins are a bad value, and they will stop buying them. The premiums for these coins will cease to exist."

That may be true for the slabbed coins Silver E CC describes.

    OTOH:

Everybody is entitled to their opinion no matter how grandiose it is.
For the last three years some have predicted the stock market is going
to crash to Depression Era Levels soon. Some predict the stock market
is going to break 3000 next year.
Some predict Gold is going to be $4,000.00 an ounce! Stock up now!
Some laughed at the Mint sell price, $1,189.00, for the 2009 Gold UHR coin.
"What a rip off that one is." I should have had mine graded
Four years later the ungraded coin sells for around $2,2xx - $2,3xx.xx.
    PCGS MS70 coins are selling for $2,900.00 - $3,100.00.

There's a group of collectors that only buy high grade slabbed coins.

Numismatic market like every other market cycles through ups and downs.
    Ask any long term collector.

Do what I do buy what you like.

Some people say spending a thousand dollars to buy a dime is just as stupid. At the end of the day, if you like it, and there is a secondary market for the products, it can't really be called a waste of money now can it.

Fair enough, buy what you like. But you are arguing with a straw man here, I didn't say any of those things. I simply believe that asset bubbles are destined to pop, and MS70 slabbed moderns, particularly with special labels and other doodads, look like a bubble to me.

OK mush195 now you opened another can of worms "LABELS" ! You here the TV show guy's peddling these bullion silver eagles with all kinds of "Rare Labels" now days a collector must buy a 2013 silver eagle with 10 different labels. o_O Goofy

I think the very worst LABEL sales pitch I heard on TV was last year at Christmas time. A very educated numismatist states, yes we have the MS69 and MS70 NGC Silver Eagles with the "SNOWMAN LABEL". OK try to sell these babies on TV with a straight face :) no offense here, the boss say's sell them what do you do!

I was cracking up ~ NGC Snowman Label :p I just have to get me one of them.

That's incredibly tacky. I'm surprised NGC would do that.

Rare ! This might be a label that one of the big boy's paid NGC as a private label. It's terrible

I think there will be a rise in fake slabs. What better way to sell a fake coin to someone than in a plastic case that they can't measure, weigh, or otherwise test as being genuine. Genius if you think about it.

Maybe this year they'll do a slab in the shape of a snowman

If someone gve me a snowman slab for a Christms present, I would be thrilled. Sure beats a snowman sweater, snowman necktie or snowman tube socks.

In fact, I think I am gonna drop some hints to my wife to put one in my stocking. She likes to buy me coins and this would be a good rather inexpensive way to remember our first Christmas together.

As a novelty or gift piece this label might be OK, but I would not show up at my friendly Coin Club with this coin and present it to my friends ( No Way). This is a sales gimmick period. o_O

My dealer won't buy graded moderns at all or at least he won't pay more than raw price because people won't pay the extra bucks

I have never been able to understand the need for slabbing any modern non-circulating coins, and don't see how there can be any difference in eye appeal between a 68, 69 and 70 unless there are spots or some other obvious defect. Especially when the original packaging usually looks nicer than a slab. For me the joy of collecting comes from owning things that aren't common, and slabbed bullion just doesn't fit that bill. It's kind of like investing in dot com stocks in 1999 based on number of mouse clicks...

I do have one question that maybe should be in another thread. What is the lowest grade ever given by a TPG for a non-circulating modern coin, not for damage but just normal wear? Are there any that make it into the lower circulated grades? I would think that a silver eagle graded PF-4 really would be rare.
