Thank you for nice comment I have 850 so far and adding. I have never really focused on a theme other then just get coins I like and CAN afford. I did accomplish one small thing, I have at least one gold coin for every century from 650BD to 2000. Here is my latest addition from Kunker auction. AV Quarter Dukat 1761 Waldeck Mint Karl Ferdinand August Furst Von Waldeck Less then 12 examples known
I was able so speak with @charlottedude a few weeks ago. He showed me several pictures on his phone of his gold collection. Stunning and amazing describes the collection the best. Many of them condition census and condition rarities. A very nice person who is willing to share his knowledge. Thank you!!
From my neck of the woods! Great early dated coins, Tibor. My Mother is from Koln (Cologne), my Dad from Julich.
Here is a really early dated one, won from Triton Auction last January. AV Stater dated BE ONV=459=162AD Kings of the Bosphorus obverse: Eupator Bosphoran King) reverse: Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus (Co. Emperors) 19mm. 7.79g. .670
Many of these collections are really amazing. It's interesting seeing them in groups rather than one at a time, although that is fine too. FWIW I am posting mine again and taking the time to say a little more about it. This is all but one each of the gold coins issued by the four US mint branches in 1840. The most common of these 8 coins is estimated to have 187 surviving in all grades. Several have perhaps less than 100. The only one not there is the Dahlonega quarter eagle. The first one I obtained was the 1840 Eagle and most recent is the Charlotte quarter eagle. It has taken me 10 years to assemble them - I got interested in 1840 coins because so many are first year of issue, there is a limited number of issues in 1840 compared to later dates, they are far less expensive than earlier mintage - and it's nice have coins of different denominations. I've had a lot of fun looking for good examples that I could afford and learning about them in excruciating detail - not many folks outside of this newsgroup would have much interest in it. haha. Thanks
Yeah, and mine as well! This thread is phenomenal! You @panzerman and @fiddlehead have some great looking coins I've never even heard of, @dwhiz and others as well! Too cool!
@fretboard I had a thread a couple of months ago that I started about my collection, https://www.cointalk.com/threads/pre-1501-ad-coins-with-dates.329064/ . If you have any questions just post them there. Hopefully you will enjoy it. Todd at blucc does great imaging. In a few weeks I will update the thread with new purchases from the last two years.
I just looked and the original participants to this thread haven't posted here in YEARS. I wonder why they quit.
No Motto Saint! Nice! Love those, the Indian Heads too. A throwback. Anyone got the story of how those early 1907's got minted without the motto. I've forgotten it (if I ever knew it).
I think cause st Gaudens thought it made the design cleaner. I like the 1907 no motto as it’s as close as I can get to a high relief. And is much less common than the 08 no motto
