Here is what I stripped today. Only took me an hour and some blades. I think its between 80 and 100lbs. I'm taking it to the scrap yard tomorrow. I'll let you know how it turns out
Ok, 85lbs and got $230. The prices are still a little on the low side in my area only 2.75 per lb. Even so still a great score for about 1.5 hours of work. I still have bout 300lbs to strip. I'm gonna hold off on buying for a couple of weeks. We have a coin show coming up. I'm thinking (hoping) I can get a few ASE's a little cheaper there than my LCS's.
Goodwin83 if it is not to much trouble could you tell me what a JVC receiver is and maybe do a tutorial on how to scrap out a TV I have three beat to u know what lol in the shed and would love to buy some silver with it. Also anything in a TV I should be careful of hurting me? can you tell by looking at the brand if they are good for scrap or not? what kinda value do you get out of a TV?( I see them at yard sales for 5 bucks)
With the minimal scrapping that I do... Just make sure the TV's haven't been used in a week, and cut the wires with 1 hand. Also, watch out for the CRT (long pipe-like thing that goes from the screen to the back), as it is a vacuum, and if opened, glass shards can spray around (take it from experience ). However, on it is a TON of copper, so you definitely want to take the outside apart.
Yowza!!! That is a LOT of freakin copper...I'm lucky to get any at all. Usually it's a real challenge...How in the world do you come by so much?
JVC is the company that made it. The stereo receiver is part of a home theater system. Most of them are just DVD/BLUray players now but before that the receiver acted like your switch between different units like VCR/DVD/CD player etc...Most receivers I've been into now have a minimal amount of copper. Best bet is to find any older unit you can get. Tube TV do surrender a bit of copper. On the "cone" which you will find when you open the back and its attached to the tube on the back...you know right away when you see the copper on it. Another thing that has the potental of surrendering copper is the Degauss cable. Its usually surrounding the tube and is wrapped in black electrical tape. I am finding that most newer tubes the cable is made of aluminum wire not copper...the power cord is copper as well....all the rest of the wires I just cut and toss in a pile of bulk insulated wire.
My cousin owns an electrial company. When we get busy I'm out on some pretty large commercial and industrial construction sites. This is the scrap from one of the 3 pharmacies we currently are working on. That is just a small amount that comes from the cut offs. There have been times when we have 1000's of pounds on industrial jobs. The largest amount I have seen was 35k in scrap It was paid in cash!!! I don't get it all the time but it is SWEET when I do.
Open it up. I usually put it facing down and then open it. There is usually a board at the bottom of the t.v. Cut wires of of that. You can choose to save the board. Some scrap yards take the electrical scrap. Its a "low-grade" board so they don't pay much per lb. there will be a smaller board attached to tube...remove it. There will be metal hose type clamps...remove those. you should be able to twist the stuff on the back to break it free and then just slide it off the tube. The cone will have copper wrapped around Ferrite and also inside the cone....pull it out....and dont for get the degauss cable...its a wrapped black wire going around the biggest section of the tube.
LOL, yes indeed. To bad I cant spend ALL of it on coins. There is that pesky thing called food, which I think is highly over rated by the way. Bottom line is this is a REALLY good idea Goodwin. Even saving old appliance cords, bad strings of xmas lights, extension cords, copper tubing, broken sink faucets, you could just go on and on. Save it and Scrap it!
Totally off topic...but I just found a 2005 S Proof Oregon Quarter in the drawer at work...lol now it mine! LOL
Alright, I posted it in a different section since its technically not bullion...heres the link. http://www.cointalk.com/t227609/#post1706178
Funny scrap story today. I stripped the rest of the wire I had. While stripping, the aluminum deck chair I was sitting in broke. So the chair got scrapped too! I was suprised when I got 8.50 for it, LOL
Ok...so heres the scoop. I went to the scrap yard today and traded in some aluminum cans, Copper wire(both 1 and 2), and some scrap steel. Now keep in mind I don't have a lot of space for stuff so I usually don't have an enormous amount of scrap I trade...its usually only a few lbs of stuff here and there. I think today was 2lbs of 1 copper...2lbs of 2 copper...5 or 6 lbs of crushed cans and almost 40 lbs scrap steel...got about 20 bucks. So I went to the coin shop today and got a peek at the premium prices and I was a little bummed. So i asked about junk price per $1 face and was told about 20. So I went with a dollar in walking liberty halves. Which upon checking provident I realized I made out rather well considering they are asking 22.30 for each dollar. So heres what I got... Oh and just in case some of you on here don't browse the other threads heres a link... http://www.cointalk.com/t227314/ This I got in change from a McDonalds.
Nice one Goodwin. And a nice bonus find at Mickey D's. I know what you are saying about the premiums. I have been getting one or two maples a week with my scrap money from my LCS. With the premiums rising, it is to the point now where I can order online and get them cheaper or around the same price and that is including shipping. And more to choose from.
