Featured Roman Imperial coin lettering & inscriptions

    Thank you @Sulla80. The short answer to your first question is that although I do not think regions (mints) “valued” careful lettering more than others, it is just the way it turned out. I think that although the quality of lettering on Roman Imperial coins began to decline beginning sometime after the adoptive emperors, there was always some disparity in the quality of lettering that varied by Mint and the individual skill level of engravers. I think this coin has nicely rendered lettering. The last paragraph in your post is what I was hoping to achieve in starting this thread (except that I think it is doubtful that Calligraphy was a known pursuit in those days).
