If you can get walking libs and even franklins I would do that. You get the most silver for your money that way. They may be moving into some kind of a numismatic coin some time as well. The Barber half is certainly moving into that classification, and I have gotten some of them in junk silver lots. I always pick them out and put them in cardboard. I look up their current value in my red book and write that on there. Common Barbers in just good condition are going for at least $15, so it's worth it if you are getting them for say $6 a piece. Common Walkers are going for at least $14 a piece. Kennedys and Frankies are going for $13, so you can see the difference.

Where are these 'going' for $14 and $13 each?
    If they only were...

According to the red book they are worth that much. I think they are going for more like $12 a piece. I was just trying to make the point that the older "junk silver" is worth more. I just got some at 14xface today. I also got a holey 1856 quarter that had been cleaned for 14x face, which is around $3.50. Even in its holey and cleaned condition I think it's worth around $25. See why I like "junk silver"!

It depends on how you plan to divest in the future.

If you want something you can liquidate quickly if required, buy ASEs or other highly desirable forms that dealers or buyers always want.

If you think the apocalypse is coming and you need silver that common people can recognize and might want, buy junk 90%.

If you are looking to minimize your cost per ounce and can do a little leg work to find the right buyer when the time comes, buy whatever is on sale. In my experience it takes a lot of patience and diligence to find smaller purchases of any form of silver at close to spot. But if you buy 10 oz bars, larger orders of rounds or 90%, etc you can pretty much always pay very low premiums.

Or, just buy what you love. I'm crazy about poured bars and ASEs, so I tend to buy those.

With silver looking to break the $15 mark and go into the $14 appears soon, be confident with limited funds. Drat that strong USD$.

Thanks for all the replies and all the helpful hints I already started with some junk silver I got for 0.50-1.00 under spot by snipe bidding on ebay. Again, Thanks!

Wow! That's incredible. .50-$1.00 under spot is a really good deal.

I think you have to decide first what is it that you are after. For example, do you believe that it is more important to maximize the total amount of oz of silver you own because you are convinced that it's the silver content that is the only thing in a coin that is of value to you? If yes, then your best bet is to buy the lowest premium, purest silver products you can find. There's plenty of it available from numerous dealers for under 99 cent premium per ounce. There's no shortage of supply based on premiums at this time.
