This is a relatively new addition for me. I’ve owned a few pieces of Classic Head gold over the decades, but not many, and I never thought I’d own another one, since they’ve moved into the outer limits of my somewhat modest budget.
A somewhat better Date. This year with the Denver mintmark is Generally on the lacklustre side. Fortunately the Strike is above average.
Somewhat more modern, this Canadian $100, .917 Gold non circulating coin has a mintage of 250,000 only in proof https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces41897.html
Please, for the sake of my mild OCD tendencies, print a little label to put inside that Capital Plastics holder and cover up that “Anthony $” inscription! I had the previous year, 1978, in one of those half-ounce proofs. (PCGS PR66 DCAM, formerly NGC PR67 UCAM). The 1977 with the bouquet of flowers is the one I always wanted. Still, the flying geese here (each representing one of the provinces) is a lovely design.
We admittedly got a wee bit off track there, and strayed a bit from old gold. (I got into a side conversation with @expat about those Canadian $100 proofs, which are lovely, but yes, a tad modern.) To make up for that, here’s one that truly is old. At least 1,456 years old- and Mint State at that. And it cost me less than 400 bucks, including slab fees. Byzantine Empire: gold tremissis of Justinian I, ca. 527-565 AD
He does have quite a schnoz there, now that you mention it. Charles III of Spain had an even bigger honker on his face.
Thanks. I know my pics aren’t the best but it does look better in hand. It was the nicest out of the five I had to choose from but at the same time I was just picking it up as bullion.
United States Gold $5 1900 This coin is unlikely to get a high grade from a grading company but I like it anyway.
