would using a coin that is brown instead of red effect it? what about luster, would that effect the outcome one way or another?

Thanks for the heads up. My family and I are going to the Magic Kingdom for a day and I bet they have these. I'll be sure to bring '81s and under.

Actually, the crustier the cent the better the details look once rolled. I used to roll only on BU coins. Now, I look for the pre 82 as dirty as they come. Ray Dillard and others actually spray paint their cents before they roll them to show even MORE detail on the smashed cents. Don't believe me? give it a try..

60 (Sixty) TEC ANA Elongated Pennies

    P1060490.jpg P1060491.jpg P1060492.jpg P1060493.jpg

The Long Story: A granddaughter (7) likes 'smashed pennies'...so when I see one I pick it up and send it to her.

eBay had this album recently, I made an offer on it and now it's mine. Turns out it's a collection from many years of ANA meetings, processed to commemorate The Elongated Collector (Club?), I think.

So, even before I attempted to make order out of it (they are not in any obvious order as shown), I thought of CT, and hoped there would be a few members able and willing to assist in evaluating and otherwise enlightening me about them. Perhaps she'll own them fairly soon, but I thought to stir this old thread just for the Halibut.

Each is in a (Mylar?) holder, with pertinent notations in the margins. After I sort them, probably by date & city, I'll post individual close-up pics.

But if y'all see something of special interest or significance, just ask...I can snap a few pics PDQ, and post 'em here.

    Press on, Mash a head!

Yeppers, penny smashers. Geez, maybe ten years ago, wifey and I made to trip to FLA and went to DisneyWorld with her sister and BIL. I took two rolls of brand new pennies and two of quarters. Went on a bloody penny smashing rampage. They must have 30 different scattered all over that place. It's not only Snow White, it's the bloody dwarves too.

    teeheh,

    peace,

Thankfully the ones in St Louis were very clean and didn't expose the zinc.

Here's one that I thought was kinda cool. Note the date of the coin and the impression of the memorial. It's a mule.;):)

If you realty like the look of smashed zincolns you can preserve them by spraying them with clear enamel paint. It's not like you are going to damage the coin at that point.

I'm assuming the metal roller opposite the roller die that has the design isn't hardened steel and the design of the memorial was transfered onto it. It then transfers that design onto subsequent coins. With the memorial being a positive (you can see a faint ONE on the shoulder of Abe) it's the theory that would explain it.

That makes sense. I'll have to be more creative when attempting to figure these things out...
