At the rate the U.S. dollar is dropping, that could happen in the near future. According to Kitco.com, the exchange rate for U.S$/Euro is $1.42 = 1 Euro. The dollar index is down 0.77 to 78.68.
What seems to have escaped everyone is that in these times of instantaneous communication, international currency trading, and computers, the world economy can function perfectly well without a reserve currency. The concept of a reserve currency was a valuable idea at the time it was created because everyone was comfortable with having a single reserve currency -- gold. It really isn't necessary now.
