I just received a roll of 1987 American Silver Eagles from eBay, and was wondering if there are any old timers on this thread that have ever opened the orange mint tube. They seem stuck. It's obvious why the Mint went to the tubes with the green top. Stock photo attached. Humor or tips would be appreciated.
I didn't say it was original, but it's clearly a mint tube - certainly an interesting part of the US Mint's history if you're an ASE collector.
I doubt that ever happened........picture.......nothing to back up my statement except that I don't think the mint would ever pack up ASE's in such a conveyance.......
Some, not all. The original tubes in '86 and part of '87 had orange caps on both sides. I suspect the plastic has shrunk over the past 30 years making them difficult to remove.
I wasn't suggesting that the coins inside the tube may have been searched. I was inquiring about the origin of the orange tube since I have never seen one before. Chris
My 1986 mint tube and 1987 mint tubes are green topped. Does the orange ones have the treasury emblem on the top like the green ones?
Probably Chinese characters........as long as I can remember, ASE's came in green topped tubes. I'm not from Missouri, but if orange is a factor, ya just gotta show me.
"In 1986 and 1987, the U.S. Mint packaged their Silver Eagles in orange tubes. These tubes make for a tighter fit than the new tubes, and therefore keep the Silver Eagles in pristine condition! This is the first 500-coin box of 1987 Silver Eagles we have seen containing the vintage orange tubes which means it will be very desirable for collectors or investors, so act fast!"
