Hey Guys, I recently acquired this coin as part of a lot. It is a 1954 Roosevelt Dime, and it got the grade of UNC Details- Obverse Wheel Mark. I am assuming a wheel mark is what a coin rolling machine makes on the end coins (but i could be wrong, feel free to correct me). However, when I look at the coin I don't see a wheel mark anywhere. Furthermore, when you go to the ngc verify page it pictures the coin in a MS65 slab. I don't own many slabbed coins so I don't know if it is common practice, or maybe this coin got the wrong label. NGC won't let me take their pictures off their site, so here is the link. https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/4688106-007/NGCDetails/. I will try to post pictures after work, but NGC did a pretty nice job. Thanks, Jason
So is your coin the same one as in the picture (meaning it has an MS 65 label)? If so, I would think it was just an input error from NGC. You can always contact them and have them fix it.
That is more interesting! I could see a number of possibilities: -NGC noticed a mark after grading (in quality control) and changed the slab (but didn’t update the photo) -Someone sent it in for grade review and NGC downgraded the coin but forgot to change the image -The image is of another very similar coin (less likely) -etc....
I hate that particular designation! Only NGC does it... Here is a thread I created About Wheel Marks https://www.cointalk.com/threads/wheel-marks-what-are-they-and-why-does-ngc-even-care.288331/
Pic of YOUR coin on a current newspaper! Probably the ultimate mechanical error... somebody fat-fingered entry
