Unbelievable,, 86 lbs of gold flakes in a pail. Guy strolls away. The "guards" probably didn't even realize it was missing till they got back to their drop spot. It has to be an inside job, no one could be that negligent.

Stealing isn't a new method to acquire gold - nor very safe with armed guards around. :p

True true ,, certainly not new. What the dickens was this clown thinking.? Or not thinking. Maybe he thought it was a barrel of coins. But no , in that Diamond District, there could be pails of flake gold. Jewelry production of rings, bracelets, chains, necklaces.
This guy watches for a few minutes and snatches a very heavy barrel of gold flakes from a Loomis truck and is then forced to carry it about 3 or 4 Avenues which is quite a distance in Midtown. Story says about 3 hours till he got it to a van.
I think he was out of state before they even realized it was missing. Then over a few days, Major Case Dets get the film from the area and track him. Guy could have parceled it out and shipped to 10 different places.
The NYPD will make the arrest but I believe this will go the Federal Route for prosecution.

The authorities have released info on the suspected thief:

Police have identified the man they say hit the jackpot after snatching a bucket of gold flakes from the back of an armored truck in Midtown Manhattan, this past September.

Julio Nivelo, 53, allegedly grabbed the pot o’ gold, worth an estimated 1.6 million, while the truck was parked on W 48th street on September 29, cops said.

The heist occurred around 4:30pm, while guards were making a pickup and left the vehicle unattended, according to officials.

Authorities say crook probably had no idea of the bucket’s contents when he swiped it.

Nivelo, who has at least five different alias, had been living in New Jersey. He has reportedly been deported to Ecuador on four separate occasions since 1994 for similar thefts, sources said.

Law enforcement originally suspected the lucky charms bandit was hiding out in Florida, but now say its likely that he’s in Los Angeles, CA.

Mr. Nivelo, 53, who is also known as David Vargas and by other aliases, was seen on surveillance video carrying the bucket, which was more than half his weight, and then taking off in a half-run, half-waddle, the police said. The theft took place on West 48th Street between Fifth Avenue and Avenue of the Americas.

Mr. Nivelo, a native of Ecuador, fled to Orlando, Fla., before heading to California, WNBC reported on Tuesday night. Mr. Nivelo, who was living in West New York, N.J., at the time of the theft, had previously been arrested seven times and deported four times, the station reported.
