I took your query to heart, and read/asked several female friends both young and older, including my daughter what they thought (I had custom white Gold earrings made for her 16th birthday, which she never wore). To a person they could not understand who would give a "base metal" colored object as a wedding ring. Virtually every women had a remark like "only a man wouldn't know the color of a Golden Gift", "why wouldn't he let her pick the object from a selection, rather than buying something he likes?", etc.. As I said, I'd already done something similar in my life, until I learned to make the female part of the decision process. I personally virtually always give a hand written "gift certificate" expressing my appreciation for having them in my life, and want them to join me in a generally unbiased selection. My women have always appreciated personal gestures. Gold color was preferred by all, with a Caveat that plated objects don't remain untarnished, and change color. Just my data from a female opinion survey, which required some coaxing from several who reluctantly paraphrased "that a man wouldn't understand, and will generally get what they like".
