First off I only buy PCGS graded coins as I believe them to do better on the resale market secondly I look for A/U coins 53-58 and never go below 53 I think this grade gives you best bang for the buck and generally a good looking coin even though iam doing allot of bullion these days and at the moment dont have any liberties on my radar, I always check places that I know are reasonable like liberty coin galleries is my first stop the only draw back is they dont have a big inventory on line but I have been to there store in Huntington Beach and its huge....!! lots of deals to be had there I avoid places like APMEX though I have bought a few coins from them there prices are higher then most but again you get a better selection so visiting several online sites is your best bet.
Picked this one up a few months back one of my favorites pre civil war and during the time of the gold rush.
Books get outdated quickly especially on price so a monthly publication would be the way to go but with all the coins there are that wouldn't be that realistic...LOL so basically research on line if thats what your looking to know.
I think of these books more as museum pieces.... They still have valuable information, and even the dated pricing (1975 & 1982) is useful if other sources don't go back that far. But yes, like you, for CURRENT prices no book will ever be up-to-date. Online auctions or the Greysheet are best. Akers died kind of young at age 72 back in 2012 I believe. I like having his signature in the proof book.
