For some reason I have developed an interest in earlier dated coins. This is only my second coin dated into the 1400's. Early 1500's dated coins seem to be much more common. Let's see some of those dated medieval coins. I know you guys have some.

Great coin! I too am fascinated by early dated coinage and have owned the Levinson book for a decade, yet still have not yet owned a single Levinson-listed coin! Too bad his book cuts off at 1500, though I can understand why.

I have had several early 1500s dated pieces (the earliest from 1505), but haven't crossed that barrier into the late 1400s-dated ones yet.

It's also great that you have a Levinson pedigree on a coin the author owned himself!

I dream of owning a gold coin with a 1400s date on it (I love the ones with those archaic numerals where the 4's look like little curlicues and the 7's are inverted V's).

One day (maybe before too long, if I save up) I'll have something along these lines...

(The following two are not mine):

    1495 Frankfurt goldgulden

    * I did own a 1400s goldgulden, but not a dated one.

    1497 Hamburg ducat

(See? This one's got both that cool little curlicue 4 and the upside-down-V for a 7!)

This is the earliest dated coin I presently own. By Levinson standards, it's practically modern! :p

Of dated coins, I primarily have 16th Century coins as well. I’ll just post this one (as I haven’t posted it in a while):
    02-Hun-Ferdinand I-AR-D-01.jpg
    Hungary
    Ferdinand I, r. 1526-1564 (1554)
Kremnitz Mint, AR Denier, 15.82mm x 0.3 grams
    Obv.: FERDINAND· D·G·R· VNG· 1554·, Coat of arms
Rev.: PATRONA· * ·VNGARIE, Madonna and Child, mintmark K B on either side

Now, are we including Islamic dated coins? Because I’ve got some older dated coins using the Hijri calendar:
    Med-14-ISic-1140-Roger II-Tar-Palermo-202.jpg
    Norman Italy - Sicily
    Roger II, r. 1130-1154 (1151-1152)
Palermo mint, AV Taris, 12.66 mm x 1.1 grams
Obv.: Outer Cufic legend denoting date and mint, inner Cufic legend al-malik Rujar al-mu’tazz bi-llah, pellet in center of dotted circle
Rev.: Outer cufic legend denoting date and mint, in center, cross potent on shaft with pellet between IC XC NI KA
Ref.: NCKS 232, [MEC 14.202]; De Wit 3796

The date is off-flan, but should read as the year 546 AH, which equates to 1151-52 AD

@alde That is a very nice coin. I've been
collecting them for 17 years. Do you have
Bob's book on these coins? It is OoP, but
you can still find them for $100 or less.

Thank you. Yes, I got the book about a year ago from a shop in Seattle in new condition.

Probably my 'best' (or at the very least, most expensive) Medieval coin.

    [IMG][IMG]

    Hyperpyron
    Mint: Constantinople
    Year: 1325 - 1328
Obv: Virgin Mary with Andronicus II & Andronicus III standing either side
    Rev: Christ standing
    Weight: 3.89g
Material: 11ct gold, mixed with silver and copper

    EDIT:

I believe the reason why it is so much cheaper to buy a coins from the 1500s than 1300s and 1400s is because the silver drought was broken

I collect coins from Liege (modern Belgium) and I have a friend that has almost completed his 15th century copper set. My friend Donald Dool is searching for a 1494 Patard, in copper. He recently wrote an article that includes a description of the Liege 1494 Patard he is looking for: https://www.numismaticnews.net/article/tiny-coins-desirable-even-damaged

@John KENT Hello John, I collect Early Dated coins as well.
I'll post a couple of my copper pieces.

    1481-Brabant-11-58 - Copy.jpg
This is the earliest piece. All of the ones that I have
    are from the Lowlands.

These copper pieces are definitely not beauty

I have two others that I will post later. I had a thread a few
weeks ago where I showed some of my collection. Maybe
one of the followers of that thread could post a link here.

Those are EXACTLY the type of coins I am looking for! I was a Rotary Exchange student to Charleroi Belgium in 1982 and I travel back frequently, so it's fun to explore the old cities and discover their history. Having numismatic momentos makes it that much easier to share the history with others back in the US.
