I'm back from the FUN show, y'all, and it was a blast.

Gimme a little more time to catch up on stuff, and we'll reveal that silver coin for Round 8, OK? :)

OK, never mind that. I seemingly can't sleep, so let's do this thing.

    Now we come to...

    ROUND 8.

    The special bonus silver round.

The prize is a silver denarius of Caracalla, struck circa 186-188 AD. It portrays Caracalla as Caesar (heir to the throne), and is of the PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS ("Prince of Youth") type. Caracalla is interesting, because you can see him age on his coins, starting out as the fresh-faced youngster seen here, and later looking more like the cruel tyrant he became. At 16 mm in diameter, this coin was struck on a rather small flan for a denarius.

Perhaps our ancient coin experts can chime in with further information about this coin.

To enter this round, all you need to do is:

    1. Say that you want it, and
    2. A word or two about why you want it or what you like about it.

If you do not want the coin for yourself, you may enter on someone else's behalf. Simply name the person you would like to have it if your entry wins the drawing.

This final round is open for entries until such time as I announce the drawing, perhaps in 1-3 days or so, depending on my schedule.

You may look back at the contest in the...

I want it. I don't have the emperor Caracalla yet and the young depiction of him is interesting. Thanks!

Lovely. I want it because it has a beautiful innocent bust of a very young Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus a.k.a. Caracalla, who is shown on the reverse next to a trophy. Which trophy would that be at such a young age?

This ancient is most fascinating with an intriguing background, Rob. I love the way you tell the story. You'd have made an incredible jongleur in medieval France.

Jongleur. I’ve always liked the sound of that word. But since I’m of Scots-Irish extraction, perhaps “bard” would work.

(Hmm… except I haven’t got a lick of musical talent, and I think the bards and jongleurs, troubadours, etc. sang their stories. So never mind. You wouldn’t wanna hear that.)

But like poetic license, I believe you get musical license when singing the Ballad of Gilligan or Marsha Marsha Marsha :hilarious:

I want it. For all the misery and deaths attributed to Caracalla, he was the man who introduced a new denomination to the Roman currency, the Antoninianus which was valued as a double denarius. Here is a silver one from Gordian III
