I have a coin I'm not sure if it's silver or not. Poured bit of acid on it, it turned green/yellow, then white / clear I am confused, this is nothing like I know. 1) If it's fake, it should turn green / blue and stay that way 2) If it's real, it should stay red or turn creamy white Pic 1 - acid still on coin Pic 2 - after acid removed Could this be silver, but plated on top?
With Nitric acid it should turn red. You do not specify what acid you used. Sulphuric, for example, with not do the same as Nitric. HNO3 is the one you want.
I used HNO3 - it is reddish in a plastic bottle. I have used it before on coins, turned white cream on silver. On this one, it first turned green yellow, then immediately cream white / clear.
Do you have any photos of the whole coin? I'm not sure, I think that there is a chance that it is fake but sometimes impurities in the acid (such as foreign matter in the container) might cause stuff like that. though photos of the whole coin would confirm. Also, Try not to use acid on any coins worth more than there bullion value, there are other ways to tell. A mint state Morgan dollar would be ruined if real with acid test.
Coin is this one in this thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/pop-out-morgan-dollar-authentic-or-not.258903/
Had it tested at jewelry store. They put it inside a machine thingy and composition popped up on computer screen. NOT SILVER!
Nickel zinc something. They said it wasn't silver I didn't really care to hear the exact composition.
