It that same distortion anywhere else on the coin or just in the word springs? I have seem this to some extent on the bullion coins, seems to be issues with the minting process...
Also ever so slightly on the 't' of Hot. No where else on the coin that I can see. Since the coin is so big, kinda jumps out at ya when you know what to look at. thanks Jon
Initially they were having problems with the edge lettering, it was crushing the coin. Are these (stress?) marks in line with the weight and fineness stamped on the edge of the coin?
The side lettering is on the farthest away edge . No marks on the opposite side of the coin at the 'Quarter Dollar' wording.
Ok.. So people have coin in hand, congrats!! I'm wondering if the mint is deciding to postpone the fact that they sold out pretty quick. I think I got two, but with silver dropping like a rock and if I don't get mine soon, I'm thinking cancel.. No bank accounts have been charged yet.. What are they doing? Typing in the numbers by hand? I thought for sure this would be automatic electronically..
Congrats on getting the Hot Springs. I have heard of only a very few deliveries to date. My guess is that the Mint is meticulously going through orders to be sure that duplicates, etc. are removed. This may be why they are still for sale because the Mint does not know exactly how many duplicates exist and also because some are canceling due to pull back in silver prices. I am liking this coin more and more. TC
If you bought yours based on the price of silver, perhaps you should. In my case, I bought for the collector value alone. What silver does is of little concern to me. We are not talking about large sums of money to begin with. This collectible will be valuable enough in its own right.
Order Status: Your order request is in process. In stock and reserved. Cancel checkbox has disappeared. TC
I don't think they sold out. My son purchased one 3 days after opening day and his order says 'in stock & reserved".
hmmmmm: 5 ounces X 34.48 (silver now) = $172.40 Initial purchase price ($279.95) minus $172.40 = $107.55 (decrease of value) hmmm: number of days to return puck to mint: 6 (today). hmmm: what to do, what to do? silver now at 34.41 ,<eek>
These are collectable coins and not bullion. Even so, silver closed at $47.78 on 4/28/11 (the day they went on sale). So, 5 * 47.78 = $238.90 (bullion value on day of purchase). Current silver value at this moment is $34.92 * 5 = $174.60. $238.90 - $174.60 = $64.30 (decrease in bullion value) However, these are collector coins and not bullion. I am guessing/hoping that collector value will exceed bullion value on this one. TC
I bought it (as stated earlier,I think it was this thread maybe the Hot Springs one) because the mintage was 27k.. I still want it, but if silver is sitting at 20 bucks, I may reconsider.. That's all I meant by that statement.
The people who will be worrying are the ones who bought the bullion version of this coin. If you haven't flipped it for profit by now, you ain't ever gonna. There is at least a numismatic element to the collector's version.
The more I look at this coin (hot springs 5 ouncer), the more I like it. As I tilt the coin to get the light to reflect off of it, it almost seems to have a 3-D effect to it. Lots of straight lines in the background, a curved fountain in the foreground. I really don't think this will see the inside of a mail-truck anytime soon! When these came out, Hot Springs was not my fav. design.... now, I am liking this coin more and more. Jon
Well, I can applaud and respect you collectors. You guys are true grit. I'm a collector too, but I ordered one of the "pucks" for bullion reasoning. I don't know, I just can't bring myself to collect this series. I ordered the Hot Springs, and promptly cancelled when the order showed "in stock and reserved". I questioned my motive to collect this issue. Was it for pure collector sense or was it linked to the bullion rise fiasco? Sadly, I concluded that I wasn't ordering one because I really wanted to own one, but I was, rather, caught up in the greed of the precious metals market. That's not where I want to be.....that's not what I want to do. Collector. That's what I want to be and do, so ya know what? I ordered the Medal of Honor Gold unc. I'd rather take that money and put it down on something that really means something to me than throw it away on something that possesses nothing more than intrinsic value. I bid thee all the best of luck in collecting this series, but for me, I'll stick to my modern and classical commems.....
I just checked the Mint website and read mine was shipped today. I'm still in the air about what to do. Keep it? Sell it to Modern Coin Mart? Return it to the Mint? Hot Springs is my least favorite site of the 5 released for 2010. I don't know whether to collect the enitre set for 2010, since it is the first year or collect them in terms of the places I really enjoyed visiting. Anyway, this is what keeps things interesting.
From a collectors stand point, I hope all you guys and gals who bought them for intrinsic value either cancel or return. Then the next hurdle I hope for will be lack of sales. Don't mean to offend anyone, but that is music to my ears. I also hope no one likes the Hot Springs piece as well. Could I be so lucky? My gosh, to own a Whistlers Mother original with no copies around! (She wasn't the most attractive lady on the block either). I will admit though, I would have preferred to buy the Hot Springs Bullion version and not the others. Unfortunately they only sold them as a set. But to have the first 3 inch, first of the series, 5oz bullion and collector piece ever issued in the history of the United States, that's priceless. They are a steal at $41 and $56 an ounce respectively. IMHO.
