Shame we don't have time or a place to get into that stuff. I am LOADED with questions on that arena. I find myself distrustful of the peak oil thing, although without an easily described reason.
I looked at it. That's raw politics, not policy wonking. Is there a site for policy discussion that doesn't fit within the usual D vs. R paradigm? Even though I work for one of those two, I disagree with at least 1/3 of each of their core philosophies. Luckily, I work for a Chairman with whom I agree at MUCH higher levels. "Leadership" hates both of us.
Just a thought, if moderation WERE content neutral, should it be done according to Tarot card readings or random chance? YOU ARE THE ONE THAT MATTERS???
Kurt, the comment in the header there says " You don't have to be a Republican or a Democrat, a Liberal or a Conservative, to join in. Just have to have a well spoken opinion.". And I believe you think you have a well spoken opinion. If you start the thread, and they find it interesting, I am sure you will get the frank discussion you seek. But certainly, I can understand why it wouldn't be your thing.
If you truly want my opinion, it should be as minimal as conceivable, and then even less so. That is my advice from both a practical and legal viewpoint. The only safe haven that the DCMA and other federal law provides is for complete and utter content agnosticism. An insistence on full legal names can be your brake on excess, in the alternative to strongly invasive moderation. And my last comment refers to the change that could have come from a thorough internal discussion and reexamination among the site staff. Alas, 'twas not to be. I am not unaware of the ugliness that can result from a laissez faire site management paradigm. I simply believe it would be the preferable of two possibly "warts and all" outcomes. Obviously, CT has decided on the other. Bad combination of preferences. I prefer the free-wheeling type of forum, that's all. My personal theory is that he who moderates least, moderates best. Same as refereeing at a sporting event. If you can't remember the refs while going home, you watched a good game.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am about as easy to get along with as anyone you will meet. My disdain for modern coins has absolutely nothing to do with CT or how it's run. It comes from long before I ever joined this forum. It's solely a personal preference that I choose to be vocal about. To insinuate that is caused by some sort of CT back room vendetta is silly. CT has these rules in place for a reason. Nobody is excluded from them. I can assure you that there are no "back room shenanigans" going on looking to target certain people... I'd have nothing to do with that at all. The large majority of the members here have also been members of the "other" forums. CT is utopia compared to the corporate forums. We try to be fair and only as heavy handed as need be. I hope you can stick around and learn to appreciate that.
Matt, I like ya', although I am more of the Nottelmannian universe than the Dingerian. I am proud of my minimal role in putting the ANA and your podcast into your present co-promotion arrangement. It is one of my contributions of which I am most pleased. No one other than Jake and your families hung on your every word at Chicago to my extent last year. You might remember that edgy humor is pretty much my "blow off steam" stock in trade. I even engage in it in our legislative offices, and a fair bit of it is "politically incorrect". There's nothing I enjoy more than tweaking the noses of the "taking myself too seriously" crowd. That said, I find the culture here more restrictive than I care for. I find it borderline offensive, if I'm being brutally honest. Diff'rent strokes. I do find the mere perception of personal targeting, not my gripe - mine is content specific, not personally aimed, at least worth a solid soul searching. It's probably not causal, just correlational. People do exhibit trend behaviors. But it seems to me worth a thorough ongoing soul searching.
... opinions make me cry ;.; Sorry for the double post, it seems ilke there's a bug in the forum software. Some combination of making a post and then hitting reply augments the post with your original content making it seem as though you are EDITING and not posting twice.
And I'm glad you are here no matter which camp you are in. I am one of the few here that is aware of your background and I appreciate you as a collector, coin show listener, and ANA volunteer I will ask as a friend first and CT mod secondly please try to keep the politics out of the forum. I want to see you stick around and just enjoy CT for what it is... A great place to discuss coins and our collections.
Such moderation prevents intelligent discussion in my opinion, though. Unless someone is blatantly flaming another, I see moderating heated debates (that are at least intelligent conversation) as counterproductive to the raison d'etre of discussion on the internet. That's just my opinion.
I and the rest of the mods are all for heated debate... Who doesn't like to grab the popcorn occasionally? It's when they cross the line into a heated debate involving politics that we get involved. I'm happy to continue this discussion via PM with anyone who would like to chat about it... But let's try to get this thread back on the original track.
Politics has always been a trigger topic on forums. It's hard to avoid, though. Also, I think you ninja'd me... I don't think the last part of your post was there when I replied. Okay, so original topic. If you look at the chart above, assuming the DOW keeps "performing" as it is (if it's not a facade) what is my reason to believe it will go up?
I kind of feel like we're at the beating a dead horse point here, but thought I'd offer another point of view anyway. To me, it feels like if someone opens up their house to throw a block party and invites all the neighbors over, whatever their background and political and religious beliefs. One guy keeps trying to steer the conversations into politics, and the host trying to be gracious, tries to steer the conversation to anything except politics. Instead of taking the subtle hint, the guest stands up and starts shouting at the host what a terrible party they have, and starts offering advice on how they should improve themselves, how they should fix up their house because it's not good enough for a block party, etc, etc. Thing is, this site is a coin forum, the bullion forum is here because a lot of coin collectors are interested in the topic too. We used to get lots of bullion investing topics in the coin chat area, and I made the decision to give this topic its own section. We also had a politics section and that caused significant strife in the community. Instead of stifling politics totally, I moved it to a separate site where a small group of fellow collectors enjoy griefing at one another about politics. And, it isn't that we totally restrict anything that veers into political, there's a real fuzzy line there and impossible to please everyone all the time. The bottom line is, though, that most of the people who enjoy their time on CoinTalk come because of their shared love of coins, and if we loosened up and allowed political discussions to run wild we'd have a lot more people unhappy with the forum here than we do now.
Yeah, it's a shame people can't handle discussion. I was trying to get back on track though. We are still in the arena of economic demagogues, at least looking at the chart. As I was saying, if it reaches 10 maybe I'll care.
I'll make you a deal, Matt, in honor of our history. If CT wants to keep my account active, I'm cool with that. But I DO need to back away for a while and cool down. I'm fairly torqued up right now about what I think was a truly bad call. There is no coach around to pull me off before I take a "technical foul", so I need to do it myself. Maybe I'll miss CT and be back, maybe not. One thing will exhibit my sick humor - your end-of-podcast irreverent outtakes are my favorite part. I love that stuff. On the substance, I find too many in this field take themselves entirely too seriously, and I do like to get all up in the grilles of people with that problem. I also like to torment Austrian School adherents, and I am aware they are legion in this hobby. It's too much fun for me to resist, and to me at least, that IS back on topic.
Of course you're welcome here, nothing you've done would cause us to not want you to be part of the community.
Muchas gracias, señor. Besides, we have only ten legislative days left in this term, and this is our "silly season" where epically bad law has a chance to pass due to a perceived need to "pander for dollars". Some days, the best service I can do my state is to convince my own party's ideologues to "stand down". That should occupy my time until adjournment sine die anyway.
"...I also like to torment Austrian School adherents, and I am aware they are legion in this hobby. It's too much fun for me to resist Before leaving won't you at least admit to being a closet Randite who's madly in love with Dagny Taggart? JUST KIDDING. Really, you should stick around. Those posts between you and NorthKorea were superb!
