Please guess the grade of the 1947-S Jefferson Nickel shown below. I have attached a poll for you to cast your vote and you may select up to 3 different things: the numerical grade, 5FS or NOT FS, and + grade. As always, comments welcome, and please remember to vote in the poll.
4FS. MS65. They don't like cuts when in prominent places, that's how I'm arriving at that grade. It's a beautiful coin, and I hope I'm wrong about it.
I would normally put this at a 66 but with the way these have been going, I’ll say 65. The hit to the left of the 4th pillar takes the steps out.
65 5FS ....the steps just make it (a few hits on the steps hurt the grade a bit but don't prevent the steps from being complete)....a hit on the obverse above the cheek prevents a 66
Because of it's age I'm just barely going MS66 No FS with PCGS because of that ding in the middle of the steps above the E (they require 5 steps for FS, I count 4). No 5 FS with NGC because I only count 4 steps if I ignore that little tiny but solid ding.
MS65 not FS. I think the rim hit on the reverse at k 230 keeps it from 66. Luster is probably there for a 66 though. Obverse is very nice. Hit on the cheek bone a remnant planchet mark as are the chatter marks on the coat shoulder.
You nailed it, and NGC liked this rather generic looking coin. My predicted grade was also MS66 5FS, and both @Mr_Flute and @Sunflower_Coins guessed right as well. Please click the link below if you would like to participate in my next GTG thread. GTG 1976 Jefferson Nickel (NGC)
Can anyone show me how 5 steps were counted? Honest question, because like so many others here, I don't see 5 steps. Here is the original image blown up an enhanced with visible steps traced in translucent red... I count 4 steps (and PCGS would likely say 3 of them are broken)...
