Acetone and resubmit? Or too risky on this key date?
I thought it had a shot at AU.
However, I am in favor of tight grading, and it seems the companies are getting a little stricter across the board, which I am OK with.

What did NGC think happened to it?

Comparing the OP to PCGS photo grade for an XF-45 and they appear very close. And yet, the two slabbed examples you posted are no where close. Could it be that their grading is inconsistent?

I actually did a thread on this coin while sending it to NGC. When I first got it I thought the back had a cleaning, and asked about it here

The OP coin is a net grade. The other two aren't exactly great pictures either

I think the xf 45 grade is spot on. I almost said xf details cleaned. It’s in a straight holder it won’t cac. I think it’s graded right. There’s not really any luster for an au grade

The date and head are nice and strong, like an Au but luster is nowhere to be seen. Like others are saying, an xf 45 seems like a compromise grade or net one. Not sure why they sometimes net grade and dont

Was just shown this coin has been used as the plate coin for PCGS at the 45 grade.

From a standpoint of wear it looks like a solid AU. I think the lack of luster may have played a large part in the final grade.

I’m assuming it was a net grade but only they know for sure. As others have mentioned it very well could be that they just won’t give AU without luster anymore.

In general though net grades are usually for minor problems or borderline things instead of just details grading everything

Agree that the reverse fields show cleaning.
Straight grade XF better than AU-Details.

I have a PCGS VF30, with CAC sticker, and your coin is much nicer than mine. That said, I don't see any evidence for a grade of AU anything. Really nice coin, though.
