To all this is not another post for 1988. It's just a reply to a coin previously posted. So it doesn't reset the waiting period.

@coin_nut When I saw your coin with William and Mary of England (copied below), I first thought it was a UK commemorative. Then I read the obverse N-E-D-E-R-L-A-N-D-E-N. Now I might have thought … Why did Netherlands mint a commemorative for the coronation of English monarchs, but thanks to this thread, I knew the answer.

    Photo from Coin_Nut.jpg

William III, a native of Netherlands and as co-monarch of England with Mary II, had saved his motherland from the expansionist Louis XIV of France.

By the late 1680s, William organized the Grand Alliance with Austria, Spain and the Netherlands to oppose the forces of Louis XIV. Upon William becoming co-monarch of England in 1689, he brought England, Scotland, and Ireland into the Grand Alliance. Prior to William’s coronation, England had been aligned with France during the reigns of Charles II and later James II. After securing his monarchy from the forces of James II in 1691, William led British forces to protect the Netherlands against the French in the Nine Years War (1688-1697). The Nine Years War ended by treaty in 1697, with favorable conditions to Netherlands.

So what did this thread have to do with my understanding of why Netherlands would commemorate the coronation of English co-monarchs? In the first life of this thread, I posted English halfcrowns of William III (1698), and William & Mary (1689). For those posts, I researched William’s life, and added some content.

For the 1698 halfrcrown, I included a segment: “Before William and Mary’s accession (in 1689) to the throne of England, Scotland and Ireland”

For the 1689 halfcrown, there’s a segment: “After William and Mary’s accession (in 1689) to the throne of England, Scotland and Ireland”.

Also have a look at PaddyB’s William & Mary halfcrown of (1689) here.

My propensity to include content with my coins developed gradually during the first life of this thread. At first editing short pieces of content directly on the CoinTalk platform, posting and printing to pdf for my records. Later I made peace with WORD, and used WORD to edit more complex content, which I then copied into the CoinTalk platform and posted. Now I write extensive WORD files for my records. Usually too large to post.

For this second life of this thread, I cherry pick coins and content that I want to share, and compress the content to something I hope is acceptable. Time willing.

Thank you for expounding on that subject. I love learning more of the history of these coins we all collect and admire. I recall something about intermarriages between the British monarchy and Hanover of Germany. Also William (Willem?) of Orange, think that was in the Netherlands.
