This Spitzgroschen was minted Zwickau. This piece is the first
Early Dated coin I bought. Glenn Schinke had a small tray of Early Dated pieces, about twenty coins and I bought this one. It was at the Summer
ANA in Atlanta, August, 2001. Glenn is one of the kindest and
most knowledgeable dealers that I know. First met Glenn at the
    Summer ANA 1991.

@tibor, I had never heard of the Es-Safar calendar. Searching the internet, I found this website which you must know well

    Dated Coins prior to 1400
While there are numerous coin types with dates in one form or another, it isn't until 1166 that one of the first steps toward the style of dating we are used to begins to appear on a European coin. Many Islamic coins have earlier dates, however they are virtually always in the Islamic Hegira calendar and not anno domini. Probably the earliest European dated coins of all are Spanish coins minted by Alfonso VIII in imitation of the Moorish coins whose issuers were slowly being driven out of the Iberian peninsula. They are dated using the contemporary Spanish or Caesar Era, sometimes referenced as the Es-Safar, calendar system used in Spain at the time which dates 38 BC as its year 1. A few types are known. One is a series of gold dinars dated from 1223 through 1255 SE (1183-1217 AD), two others are an obol and a denier of 1204 SE (1166 AD). In January 2007 CNG sold the first confirmed 1204 Spanish Era dated denier, all previous dated examples being oboles. These latter two coins are probably the first coins on the European continent to have ANY date written with Roman numerals MCCIIII, the dinars have the date written out as Arabic words rather than numerals (such as writing "Two Thousand Seven" on a modern coin instead of 2007).

Some of you might have read my comments to some of the coins that
they are candidates for upgrade. Some of these coins have had a slightly
better replacement come along. I did not pursue them because the
improvement was not great enough to justify the purchase. Going from
VF-30 to VF-35 or even XF-40 was not worth the trouble. I did however
buy/bid on a coin where there was significant improvement with the date.
Most of the time improvements never appear. Even though the coin may
be listed as common or scarce in Levinson's book they just do not show
up in the market place or auction venue. In the last 18 years I've only
upgraded 25 coins. I probably have that many more to upgrade. While
this is an EXTREMELY small niche in Medieval coins, nice quality pieces
rarely come along. Will post for a few more days and then take a break
for the 4th of July holiday.
