    German East Africa - 1 Pesa, 1891

This was an red uncirculated coin when I purchased many years ago. It was in a PVC page for years when I took a break from collecting and got destroyed by PVC rot.

Isn't there some way to "clean" that gunk off and not damage the coin? I hear people on here talk of a dip in acetone or some such solvent. I have lightly cleaned some copper coins with a soft toothbrush and olive oil, then wash them in dishwashing detergent and air dry thoroughly. Am I talking blasphemy here?

I have tried soaking it in acetone for an extended period. I think the surface of the coin has been permanently damaged by a chemical reaction. I have a few others that were in the same page and they have a similar issue. They are all copper or bronze.

Since there haven't been any new replies since Wednesday night, I propose that the next theme be coins with holes.

I once owned one of the condition census examples of the 1929 Lundy 1-Puffin. It was tied with 4 other coins as finest graded (MS65 RD).

Now, wanna hear the sad and pathetic part (aside from the fact I sold it)?

Until you mentioned it just now, I had no idea that these had a lettered edge!

Wow. Somehow that detail eluded my attention, despite the fact that I owned mine as a raw coin for a while before it went off to PCGS.

In case the theme is only coins with mint-made holes, here you go.

China: cast bronze cash coin, Tang Dynasty, Anonymous Middle Type, ca. 718-732 AD

    Obverse: KAI YUAN TONG BAO.
Reverse: Crescent above central square hole.

@lordmarcovan I bet you could keep this theme going for quite some time with coins from your holey hat and vest.

Nonetheless, I should've specified this earlier, but mint made and post mint holes are valid submissions for the theme.
