Although not a prepper, I do some of the things they do because of where I live. I live in the mountains (at 8,000 ft) in a suburban/rural area. The electricity goes out from time to time, so I have a generator. The water is suppied by a community water system, so we filter it and keep several cases of bottled water as backup (the community water system relies on electricity to pump its water through the system). We have enough emergency food supply to last for a month in case of bad weather and the only food store around might not get deliveries. I am a Viet Nam Vet that knows how to protect myself and my wife, so I do own firearms and more important, know how to use them.

I bought the best safe that I could afford and keep my silver in it, the more valuable gold coins are keep in a seperate place. Having said the above, I do not bury any precious metal in the ground. My wife's uncle passed away and he had left, in his will, that he had buried precious metal, gold & silver, in the ground. It was a nightmare searching for it with a metal detector. To this day we don't know if we found it all.

I was a reserve sheriff's officer for almost 30 years, so if you're trying to hide your precious metal, thieves, unless they are inexperienced ones, know all the common hiding spots for valuables. If you must hide valuable items in your home, I would suggest, if you have a two or more story home, to hide them at the highest story in your home. Thieves tend to want to get in and out and going up stairs to search is not a very common thing for thieves to do. I have a friend who built a bookcase that was big enough to hide the door to a walk-in closet, he put hinges on one side and small casters on the other, added a latch to keep the bookcase closed, and came up with the perfect place to put their valuables.

I really am saddened by the current state of our country. We didn't have the current level of techmology that we have now, but I'd gladly give it up for the attitude of the general population back then.

Sorry for the long post, but sometimes I just need to get things off of my chest.
