Considering the number of different soil types and ways coins are cleaned, I'm thankful we have so many smooth coins.
I realize this is a bit random, but the same seller that sold me the OP coin had a group of cobs, and I have been wanting to collect some. If anyone has any advice as to reading material on these pieces, please post it in the World Forum here.
There is one theory that the dollar sign evolved from the Potosi mint mark, which was comprised of the superimposed letters PTSI. So we're at least in the right neighborhood.
Interesting! I have a very passing fancy for these Spanish coins, but have only picked up a few battered maravedi. Does the term 'cob' refer to a specific type or denomination? I have a (probably mistaken) notion that they refer to the crudely produced silver and gold coins of the New World.
My understanding of 'cob' is that the flans were hacked off a larger piece rather than being cast into rounds. There are some that were obviously made an intentional shape but most seem to be ragged.
Well the Constantinople Commem came in yesterday. I'll buy almost any decent Imperial emission of Alexandria if I can get it cheap. I love the distinctive style. A very humble acquisition to be sure, but you know...you can't always be buying aureii and solidi. You've got to mix it up once in a while.
The OP coin arrived this morning, after a month! It wasn't the seller's fault - it sat in customs for 3 weeks. I was officially going to start worrying next week. It's a very, very pleasing example of the type, with attractive light-brown color...
Awesome details Big John, when you collect ancients you learn to wait! glad it showed up safe and sound.
