Why would they make them 8 troy ounces? That makes no sense whatsoever. 8 troy ounces is 33.33% greater than 1/2 troy pound (12 troy ounces equals one troy pound) and is equal to 8.777 ounces avoirdupois which and more than 9.7% greater than 1/2 pound avoirdupois. Someone is confusing troy weight and avoirdupois weight.
That really is the question of the hour... I always think the same thing but we see them quite frequently at 8 ounces troy.
So how are they selling them and how are you buying them? Do you pay for 8 troy ounces or 1/2 troy pound (which is 6 troy ounces)? That is extremely confusing and it leaves the door open for somebody to get screwed - most likely the person who is not familiar with the differences between troy weight and avoirdupois weight.
All the one's I've owned were 8 troy ounces. Many are for sale on eBay (where I bought mine) and most are 8 troy ounces. If they are 1/2 troy pound, they should be labeled as such.
That's just it. There thinking regular US oz (aka AVOIRDUPOIS OUNCE aka 1/2 pound of meat!!) which in reality is misleading. This is my very point. Do you get it now? If you look on there sales you will clearly see 1/2 pound like the one I presented.
Same here but 99.9% ebay sellers will have there start price @ 8oz x spot if not more. Then what do you do? I confront sellers and they either simply ignored me or just came back with "I said 8 oz. not 8 troy"???? O well.
Can someone explain to me the "logic" of making an 8-troy-ounce round and labeling it "1/2 LB." (like the one shown in the photos posted by rounded)? If the intent was to make a "half-pound" round he failed miserably. With 12 troy ounces in a troy pound a half-pound would be 6 troy ounces (not 8 troy ounces). Perhaps the reason the person making the rounds chose 8 ounces is because he thought there were 16 troy ounces in a troy pound (in which case he again failed miserably).
In all fairness some claim to have 1/2 pound, one pound, etc.. that actually weighs 8 Troy. This we need to see to conclude this. Personally, any silver that is stamped in oz/lb. is in the wrong from start.
eBay needs to make a policy that bans these sellers who sell gold plated coins and bars as well as silver coated crap to unsuspecting consumers who might not catch that little part that these scamming (*(&'s hide somewhere in their auction descriptions. Ex: '10 1oz Fine Silver Bars !!! 100 mills' Starting Bid: $90 And people bid on it who have no clue that it's worth no more than garbage.
The simple answer to this is that most people do not use "troy" pounds. Troy ounces, however, are the only way precious metals are calculated and since people equate 8 ounces with half a pound, they were made that way. The Washington Mint had millions of these Half Pound Silver rounds made at 8 troy ounces. http://shop.ebay.com/sis.html?_nkw=8+OZ+HALF+POUND+WASHINGTON+MINT+999+SILVER+EAGLE+COIN
Well, unless I can see a pic of it on a scale it's not worth buying nor trusting. Others may but there's has to be more proof then a name on it. Thanks FishyOne for the input. By the way since you buy so many of these do you have one to share on a scale?
I grabbed a 1000 gram electronic scale on eBay for less than $8 free shipping. It took nearly 3 weeks to arrive, but when I checked it out, it was exact ! A Morgan weighed 421 grains, etc. I was surprised at just how accurate it was. Cents, dimes and multiples all hit right where they were supposed to. I guess, what I am saying is that you don't need to spend a lot and by getting a 1000 gram, you can even use it for postage weights of larger items like books, etc.
So what you are saying is that the general public is too stupid to understand the troy system of measurement so, rather than educate them, we reinforce their misperceptions by calling 8 troy ounces a half pound. We are doomed.
Isn't Troy where Brad Pitt got in a fight with a bunch of Roman looking guys over a woman ? And somebody got cut in a sword fight on the beach ?
If you ever watch Jay Walking on Jay Leno you can appreciate how true that statement is. I don't know what they teach in school anymore but it is not what I was taught. People (in general) know all about pop culture but next to nothing about practical things.
Just take a look at this auction. There's no question this piece, like the one's I've owned, is labeled "HALF POUND FINE SILVER". It's COA and the auction clearly state 8 troy ounces. The one's I had were sold to APMEX and I was paid for 8 troy ounces each. http://cgi.ebay.com/1990-SILVER-EAG...081?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588a260359
