Not antediluvian but losers in a massive bronze age battle in the Tollense valley Germany. Apparently warriors came from miles to have a fight-quite a few remained.
An excellent lecture by Eric Cline. And here he is on one of my favourite podcasts. https://www.google.com/amp/s/archyfantasies.com/biblical-archaeology-with-eric-cline-episode-87/amp/
I don’t have a lot to add to this discussion, but I thought I’d show a pic from yesterday. I was out walking near a rock carving site from what was early bronze age in western Norway, 1800-500 BC. http://www.stavangertravel.com/trip/fluberget-revheim.cfm
It's a joke! The picture looks like svessien had drawn red over the original bronze age drawing--of course he hadn't. I commented that his efforts were better than the bronze age artist.
LOL, agreed! I did not know if you were referring to some conspiracy theories that I missed. I keep waiting for the Pharaoh's Air Force Bases to be uncovered! I do not think there were any Aliens. I just think it was not the Germans who developed the jet engine. It was the ancient Egyptians. How do you think that they were able to trade with the Mycenaeans, or get Lapis Lazuli from Afganistan, or fight the Hittites??? That can only be the logical explanation...
On one episode of "Ancient Aliens" they stated that all of Germany's advanced technology like the ME-262/ Horten Go-222 Slealth Fighter/ Type XXII U-Boots/ Night vision telescopic sights/ A-4 Missiles/ Tiger !/IIs/ Die Glocke "Bell" antigravity experiments/ where from reverse engineering of a 1936 "Saucer Crash". Considering how many Nobel Laureates came from Germany/ they are not the illerates of 9AD when they where a bunch of primitives fighting each other.
I was making an absurd joke as an historic anathema, John. No offense to Germany, nor the scientists.
Actually, they have stopped painting them. They found out that the pain protected the original carving from wear, while the fields around would wear, evening out the carvings. There are quite a few sites with carvings from the bronze age, monoliths from iron age and even early christian stone crosses around that area. The fjord nearby was where the final battle to gather Norway into one realm stood, in 872 AD. They have raised this modern monument for that:
And how do you think so much amber from the shores of the Baltic Sea ended up in the Mediterranean civilizations? It was obviously too far to walk, so it's clear that they had daily plane flights.
Had not noticed this book before, so had a look at on-line summaries and reviews. Was not impressed. Surely ideas about reasons for the collapse of societies fascinate every generation – think of Hesiod and his “Ages of Man” which seems to me somewhat like the (vast) cycles of creation and destruction favoured in Hinduism. Or the varying approaches taken in the Bible, the Flood on one hand, or the Tower of Babel for another. Plato and Aristotle feared the rise of Democracy (which worried Keynes and Toynbee in the 20th century too). I was brought up to believe the Western Roman Empire collapsed due to excess taxation – still looks a good bet to me today. Speaking for myself, the “Collapse” book that impressed me most for its ideas was Ibn Khaldun’s “Muqaddimah” which hit the stores in time for Christmas, 1377. A kind of sophisticated working out of the Tower of Babel myth, as I read it. Meanwhile, from appearances, Diamond was just jumping on the Climate Change band wagon. Ignoring, say, the fascinating cyclical collapse of Chinese Dynasties every 300 years or so to focus rather heavily on the fragmentary evidence of a few tiny Island populations – or so it seems. Apparently I was unfair to suggest it was @Alegandron who forgot what Diamond said about all advanced societies being Kleptocracies. The guy who maybe forgot this was Diamond himself……. Rob T
Kleptocracy is a sign of having too much resources and too much time on your hands to collect and do useful things. Thus it is a sort of distraction exercise. The really pointless collecting of goodies and display items, art works and knick-nacks etc. Conspicuous consumption. Coin collecting comes to mind and US coin collecting and grading and error finding and slabbing the most wasteful.
Kleptocracy (from Greek κλέπτης kléptēs, "thief", κλέπτω kléptō, "I steal", and -κρατία -kratía from κράτος krátos, "power, rule") is a government with corrupt leaders (kleptocrats) that use their power to exploit the people and natural resources of their own territory in order to extend their personal wealth and political powers. Typically, this system involves embezzlement of funds at the expense of the wider population. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleptocracy
Like I had said before, Taxes from the dawn of Humans, is just legalized theft... I DO understand a pool of money is always needed for roads, bridges, etc. But, Humans have been taken for excessive taxes, indemnities, tarriffs, tolls, etc far above needed. Ancient leaders have abused these powers and pools of money for their extravagance... Let's see... CAESAR? And uses it to kill off whole Nations? We Humans have been "conditioned" to this "responsibility" to pay your taxes for MILLENNIA. What is the true pool of money needed for "Civilization"?
