Wow, @Curtisimo! Thanks! That was wonderful! (as always) I feel like I went on a mini-vacation. It would be great to learn more about the pirates of that time -- what their ships looked like -- anything about them. So, where are 'we' (all, vicariously) going next!??!? :):p

Haha thanks LaCointessa :) your comments are always a pleasure to read.

Now that you mention it I am working on another write up for my newest coin that will include some places from my trip! Hopefully you all won't get tired of my long winded write ups ;)

Speaking of which I was going back through my photos of the Archeological museum of Split (which has a fantastic coin collection that deserves its own thread I think!) and came across another one of the less than 10 Daorsi coins that are still in existence with the ethnic ΔΑΟΡΣΩΝ.

    IMG_6347.JPG
Daorsi coin is third row from the bottom on the right.

As far as I know two are in Vienna, one is in Berlin, one is in Split and the rest are in Sarajevo.

    Surely, you jest...

Yes, that coin collection in the photograph is inviting. Also, the coin exhibition cabinet gave me a good idea for something I practically (with a little tweaking) already have on-hand and could be using as I am working on my numerous crusty/gunkies. Thanks!

Indeed, indeed. Or kept a close eye on the ground.

Hey, you never know what might even be lying right on the surface.

Not that I'm suggesting I'd have gone on an illegal souvenir hunt or become an artifact smuggler. The thought and temptation would certainly have been strong, though.

Unfortunately not. That coin is in the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I only became aware of the type after visiting the archeological site and the museums in the area.

I know what you both mean. It was really cool to be at such an important site that hasn't been paved over to make way for tourist busses. With the larger part of the city being unexcavated and the out of the way location I am confident that future archeological excavations will turn up some really neat stuff. If you did happen to find something on the ground the museum in Stolec is close enough that you could either take it there or let them know where it was and go on your way guilt free :)

Excellent write up, I honestly learned a lot about a people I've never heard of. History is what fueled my interest in coins. Thank you very much!

Allow me to add my thanks for your excellent scholarship. If I may add a footnote, Alexander the Great's mother was an Illyrian. He lived among her people while in disfavor among his father's cousins until he was able to assert his kingship. Much later, after the Roman Empire was split East and West, the Greeks still had grudging admiration for the Illyrians who reminded them of themselves in their heroic age.

I love places like this, little-known history that you can just explore all on your own! Thanks for the post and all the great information. I hope to visit the Balkan area sometime, so I'll have to keep this place in mind.
